Elongation factor Tu (EF-Tu), encoded by tuf genes, carries aminoacyl-tRNA to the ribosome during protein synthesis. Duplicated tuf genes (tufA and tufB), which are commonly found in enterobacterial species, usually coevolve via gene conversion and are very similar to one another. However, sequence analysis of tuf genes in our laboratory has revealed highly divergent copies in 72 strains spanning the genus Yersinia (representing 12 Yersinia species). The levels of intragenomic divergence between tufA ...

Abstract Transgenic rodent (TGR) models use bacterial reporter genes to quantify in vivo mutagenesis. Pairing TGR assays with next-generation sequencing (NGS) enables comprehensive mutation pattern analysis to inform mutational mechanisms. We used this approach to identify 2751 independent lacZ mutations in the bone marrow of MutaMouse animals exposed to four chemical mutagens: benzo[a]pyrene, N -ethyl- N -nitrosourea, procarbazine, and triethylenemelamine. We also collected published data for 706 lacZ ...

The National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) is a randomized multicenter study comparing low-dose helical computed tomography (CT) with chest radiography in the screening of older current and former heavy smokers for early detection of lung cancer, which is the leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States. Five-year survival rates approach 70% with surgical resection of stage IA disease; however, more than 75% of individuals have incurable locally advanced or metastatic disease, the latter ...

Clinical trials and quality control measures are characterized by evaluation of assistive technology by users, and feedback to providers for the purpose of improving devices or service delivery. These processes recognize that consumer satisfaction is an important measure of device and service delivery effectiveness. In this article, types of clinical trials are reviewed, and both prospective and retrospective methods of quality control are presented. The authors take the position that rehabilitation ...

Present body-powered upper-limb prostheses use a cable control system employing World War II aircraft technology to transmit force from the body to the prosthesis for operation. The cable and associated hardware are located outside the prosthesis. Because individuals with arm amputations want prostheses that are natural looking with a smooth, soft outer surface, a design and development project was undertaken to replace the cable system with hydraulics located inside the prosthesis. Three different ...

The investigators measured efficiencies of body powered prehensors and cable control components of prostheses available for young children. Results indicated that the cable control systems and hook type prehensors have moderate to high efficiencies, but children's body powered hands have very low efficiencies. Measures of arm and shoulder strength of 3–5 year-old limb deficient children, both on the limb deficient and sound sides, were less than that reported in the literature for normal children. ...

At present, upper-limb amputees have a basic choice of a hook or a hand for the prosthetic prehensor. In the USA about two-thirds of upper-limb amputees wear hooks and about one-third wear hands. Either of these options represents a compromise. The hook is more functional and the hand is more cosmetic. Some amputees solve the dilemma by having one of each and interchanging them as work and social situations dictate. However, they would prefer to have one acceptable prehensor, and they want one which ...
