The trace element uptake process of plants is a key factor in assessing the risks of trace element build-up in agricultural soils. Scarce information exists on the trace element dynamic uptake of plants grown in the field, especially on those potentially hazardous. In this study, the uptake process of As, Cd, Cu, and Zn in maize plants was quantified and characterized throughout the entire season. Along two seasons, the uptake dynamics of field-grown maize plants in absorbing the soil borne trace ...

Forest fires are a common occurrence in central southern Chile where soils are mostly Andisols. The ash deposits may alter the chemical properties of the soils in the burned areas and nearby agricultural lands. In a column experiment, three Andisols found in this region were treated with 2-cm-thick ash deposit on the surface and leached with 12 pore volumes of water for 3 months. At the end of the leaching, the ash-treated and their respective control soils were sectioned, and the surface charge ...

The pH inside a swollen polyelectrolyte network is calculated through a simple model, based on Donnan equilibrium and balance of mobile ions, extended to include the presence of a supporting electrolyte (salt) in the solution that swells the particle. This pH inside the gel, although needed to characterize the ionization properties of the polyelectrolyte, is generally not accessible to direct measurement. The main advantage of our model is that it is free from any simplification concerning the pKa ...

Abstract Sperm from the decapod crustacean Rhynchocinetes typus undergo dramatic shape changes as they pass from the vas deferens to seawater and interact with the oocyte envelopes. Using FITC‐phalloidin and antitubulin antibodies, we were able to localize microfilaments and a tubulin‐like protein in R. typus spermatozoon. Microfilaments and the tubulin‐like protein were associated with the sperm rays and spines, but were absent at the spike and at its base. Folded and unfolded spermatozoa display ...

The structural and surface changes undergone by the different precursors that are produced during the synthesis of imogolite are reported. The surface changes that occur during the synthesis of imogolite were determined by electrophoretic migration (EM) measurements, which enabled the identification of the time at which the critical precursor of the nanoparticles was generated. A critical parameter for understanding the evolution of these precursors is the isoelectric point (IEP), of which variation ...

The swelling capacity (S) of poly(N-vinylimidazole) (PVI) hydrogels in aqueous acid solutions was measured as a function of the pH, the nature of the acid, and the polymer network structure. In acid solutions, imidazole groups become protonated and the swelling capacity increases to reach a maximum corresponding to a degree of protonation equivalent to the Manning limit charge density. The variable controlling the degree of protonation, and therefore the swelling capacity, is the mass of dry polymer ...

The complexes TpXCu (TpX = homoscorpionate ligands) efficiently catalyze the insertion of the carbene fragment :CHCO2Et, generated from ethyl diazoacetate, into the OH bond of saturated and unsaturated alcohols, under mild conditions. In the case of unsaturated alcohols, the reaction proceeds selectively toward the insertion product, and in no case has the addition product been observed.

The pH inside a dissolved polyelectrolyte coil or a swollen ionic polymer network is not accessible to direct measurement. It is here calculated through a simple model, based on Donnan equilibrium, counterion condensation (for charge density exceeding the critical value), and balance of mobile ions, without any assumption on the pKa of the ionizable groups. The data needed for the calculation with this model are polymer concentration, pH value in the initial solution, and pH value in the bath at ...

The number of variables controlling the behavior of ionic gels is large and very often some of them are unknown. The aim of this work is to interpret quantitatively the swelling behavior of pH sensitive gels, with the minimum number of simplifying assumptions. With this purpose, the equilibrium degree of swelling (S) and protonation (α) of chemically cross-linked poly(N-vinylimidazole) (PVI) immersed in aqueous salt solutions were measured as a function of the ionic strength (μ), in the whole range ...

Two experiments were conducted: In the first, broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica) plants were cultivated in pots under greenhouse conditions, and received a N-fertilization equivalent to 150 Kg N ha−1 as ASN+DMPP (one application), urea (two ...

Multiple linear regression of ν e versus BA concentration ([BA]) and total comonomers concentration ( C T ) in double log scale render the scaling law ν e ∼ C × [BA] 1.04 as comparable to that predicted by the ...

Cervical mucus is produced throughout the menstrual cycle. Sperm migration, however, is possible only during the periovulatory period of the cycle. Cervical mucus is also produced during the amenorrhoeic post-partum period. Post-partum mucus is very similar to luteal phase mucus except that it can allow sperm migration. In this study, mucus samples obtained from all these periods were classified according to their capacity to allow sperm migration. The biochemical characteristics of mucus samples ...

Abstract Poly( N ‐vinylimidazole) hydrogels immersed in aqueous acid solutions produce an increment in the pH of the bath because of proton uptake by basic imidazole moieties, leading to hydrogel protonation. Both kinetic and equilibrium measurements of the pH of the bath have been performed under a variety of conditions and with different hydrogel samples. The kinetics of the xerogel protonation process (which includes solvent and titrant diffusion, the true protonation reaction or ion–dipole association, ...

We evaluated the effects of Cd(2+) on the production of phenolic compounds and antioxidant response of Vaccinium corymbosum L. Plantlets were exposed to Cd(2+) at 50 and 100µM for 7, 14 and 21 days. Accumulation of malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and the antioxidant enzyme SOD was determined. The profile of phenolic compounds was evaluated using LC-MS. Nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI) and NZVI supported onto montmorillonite (NZVI-Mt) were synthetized and used in this study to remove SeVI and AsV from water in mono- and binary-adsorbate systems. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm data for SeVI and AsV were adequately described by the pseudo-second-order (PSO) (r2>0.94) and Freundlich (r2>0.93) equations. Results from scanning electron microscopy showed that the dimension of the NZVI immobilized on the Mt was smaller than pure NZVI. Using 0.05 g of ...

When heavy-metal containing soil amendments are land applied, a multi-component soil-solution equilibrium may occur in which various metals compete simultaneously for the sorption sites on the soil particles. In order to determine the effect of competition among Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn on sorption characteristics and the selectivity sequence ...

In pure water, the swelling capacity decreases monotonously upon increasing the crosslinker ratio and the total comonomers concentration in the polymerization feed mixture.
