The new ligand L-OH, containing two diethylenetriamine subunits linked by 2,6-dimethylphenol, forms stable binuclear metal complexes in aqueous solution, in which the coordination environment of the metal ions is unsaturated. The phenolate unit forces the two metal ions to remain close to each other, and the binuclear species then adds a secondary ligand that bridges the two metal centers. This is illustrated by two crystal structures of Cu(II) and Ni(II) binuclear complexes.

The synthesis of two new polyamine macrocycles, each bearing the 1,1′-bis(2-phenol) group as an integral part of the cyclic framework, is reported. The ligands were obtained by template reactions using a cadmium(II) complex of the suitable polyamine condensed with 3,3′-diformyl-1,1′-bis(2-phenol), followed by selective reduction of the two imine bonds and demetallation in acidic medium.

A new fluorescent NBD-polyaza-macrocycle sensor (L) was synthesized. The coordination of Cu(ii) and Zn(ii) in acetonitrile switches on the fluorescence with different emission wavelengths. Cu(ii) complexes showed solid-state fluorescence. Both L and Cu-complex interact with human cell line (U937) highlighting the cell membrane by fluorescence microscopy.
