Cyclosporine is a cyclic peptide with a selective immunosuppressive action. One of its 11 amino acids is a novel amino acid, (4R)-4-((E)-2-butenyl-4,N-dimethyl-L-threonine, the preparation of which allowed the synthesis of cyclosporine and specifically modified analogues. Structure-activity relationships emerging from the study of modified cyclosporins suggest that a large portion of the cyclosporine molecule is involved in interactions with its lymphocyte receptor and that this includes amino acids ...

A new procedure to solve the Poisson-Boltzmann equation is proposed and shown to be efficient. The electrostatic potential due to the reaction field is calculated directly. Self-interactions among the charges are completely eliminated. Therefore, the reference calculation to cancel out the self-energy is not needed. © 1996 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

This article extends the debate initiated by Haslag, Nieswiadomy, and Slottje (1991, 1994) and Gamber and Sorensen (1994) in this journal about whether the net discount ratio can be described as a stationary process. Haslag, Nieswiadomy, and Slottje found discount ratios to be stationary. Gamber and Sorensen concluded that they are nonstationary; however, they identified the source of the nonstationarity as a single shift in the mean of the series. In previous work we presented Pico, an authentication system designed to be both more usable and more secure than passwords. One unsolved problem was that Pico, in its quest to explore the whole solution space without being bound by compatibility shackles, requires changes at both the prover and the verifier, which makes it hard to convince anyone to adopt it: users won't buy an authentication gadget that doesn't let them log into anything and service providers won't support a system that no users ...

Pico is a user authentication system that does not require remembering secrets. It is based on a personal handheld token that holds the user's credentials and that is unlocked by a "personal aura" generated by digital accessories worn by the owner. The token, acting as prover, engages in a public-key-based authentication protocol with the verifier. What would happen to Pico if success of the mythical quantum computer meant secure public key primitives were no longer available, or if for other reasons ...

A new procedure to solve the Poisson–Boltzmann equation is proposed and shown to be efficient. The electrostatic potential due to the reaction field is calculated directly. Self-interactions among the charges are completely eliminated. Therefore, the reference calculation to cancel out the self-energy is not needed. © 1996 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Abstract The dependence of charge carrier mobility on semiconductor channel thickness in field‐effect transistors is a universal phenomenon that has been studied extensively for various families of materials. Surprisingly, analogous studies involving metal oxide semiconductors are relatively scarce. Here, spray‐deposited In 2 O 3 layers are employed as the model semiconductor system to study the impact of layer thickness on quantum confinement and electron transport along the transistor channel. ...

Acute invasive fungal rhinosinusitis (AIFRS) is a fulminant infection in immunocompromised patients requiring rapid diagnosis (DX), frequently made on frozen section (FS) of sinonasal biopsies, followed by prompt surgical debridement. However, FS interpretation is often difficult and DX sometimes not possible. In this study we sought to characterize reasons for misinterpretation and methods to improve diagnostic accuracy. The FS slides from 271 biopsies of suspected AIFRS in a 16-year period were reviewed ...
