Massive MIMO uses a large number of antennas to increase the spectral efficiency (SE) through spatial multiplexing of users, which requires accurate channel state information. It is often assumed that regular pilots (RP), where a fraction of the time-frequency resources is reserved for pilots, suffices to provide high SE. However, the SE is limited by the pilot overhead and pilot contamination. An alternative is superimposed pilots (SP) where all resources are used for pilots and data. This removes ...

Signaling pathways necessary for memory formation, such as the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway, appear highly conserved across species and paradigms. Learning that food is inedible (LFI) represents a robust form of associative, operant learning that induces short- (STM) and long-term memory (LTM) in Aplysia . We investigated the role of MAPK signaling in LFI memory in vivo. Inhibition of MAPK activation in animals prior to training blocked STM and LTM. Discontinuing MAPK signaling immediately ...

Abstract The human cortex comprises diverse cell types that emerge from an initially uniform neuroepithelium that gives rise to radial glia, the neural stem cells of the cortex. To characterize the earliest stages of human brain development, we performed single-cell RNA-sequencing across regions of the developing human brain, including the telencephalon, diencephalon, midbrain, hindbrain and cerebellum. We identify nine progenitor populations physically proximal to the telencephalon, suggesting ...

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD), due to the multifactorial damage associated with alcohol (ethanol) consumption and metabolism, is one of the most prevalent liver diseases in the United States. The liver is the primary site of ethanol metabolism and is subsequently injured due to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), acetaldehyde, and metabolic stress. Building evidence suggests that dihydromyricetin (DHM), a bioactive flavonoid isolated from Hovenia dulcis, provides hepatoprotection by enhancing ...

Arginase 1 (Arg1), which converts l-arginine into ornithine and urea, exerts pleiotropic immunoregulatory effects. However, the function of Arg1 in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) remains poorly characterized. Here, we found that Arg1 expression correlated with the degree of inflammation in intestinal tissues from IBD patients. In mice, Arg1 was upregulated in an IL-4/IL-13- and intestinal microbiota-dependent manner. Tie2-Cre Arg1fl/fl mice lacking Arg1 in hematopoietic and endothelial cells recovered ...

The pathogenesis of atherosclerosis involves dysfunctions of vascular endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells as well as blood borne inflammatory cells such as monocyte-derived macrophages. In vitro experiments towards a better understanding of these dysfunctions are typically performed in two-dimensional cell culture systems. Abstract Background Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been suggested to augment liver regeneration after surgically and pharmacologically induced liver failure. To further investigate this we processed human bone marrow-derived MSC according to good manufacturing practice (GMP) and tested those cells for their modulatory capacities of metabolic alterations and liver regeneration after partial hepatectomy in BALB/c nude mice. Methods Human MSCs were obtained by bone marrow aspiration of healthy donors as ...

Due to the scarcity of the resource oil but also to increasing environmental awareness the market of biopolymers show a continuous growth. Biopolymers have different properties compared to conventional polymers which could lead to different processing requirements for the laser transmission welding process. In order to investigate the suitability of the process and to elaborate the differences between conventional polymers and biopolymers, three biopolymers [PLA, Bio-PE, and Bio-PET] are selected ...

Abstract Unlike other joining techniques, laser transmission welding offers unique advantages such as selective and contactless energy deposition. This enables the fabrication of flexible seam geometries at low mechanical and thermal stresses. However, the use of absorbing additives for the lower joining partner such as carbon black is crucial as most polymers are transparent in the spectral range of typical beam sources (800–1100 nm). A novel approach is the application of beam sources emitting ...

Recent evidence revealed important interactions between clonal hematopoiesis (CH) and cellular therapies established for the treatment of hematologic malignancies. The impact of CH on safety, efficacy, and outcome of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy is currently under investigation. We analyzed 110 patients with relapsed/refractory B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (n = 105) or acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) (n = 5), treated with Axicabtagene-Ciloleucel (39%), Tisagenlecleucel (51%), or Brexucabtagene ...

ABSTRACT PURPOSE: Children with dense superficial opacities of the cornea are at risk for developing amblyopia. This study evaluated the efficacy of phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) in severe cases of anterior stromal scarring. METHODS: Five eyes of five patients, aged 6 to 8 years, were included. Three children suffered from uveitis-associated band keratopathy, one child had anterior corneal stromal scarring due to viral infection, and one child had anterior basement membrane dystrophy. Phototherapeutic ...
