Pulmonary embolism is a common and potentially fatal disease, with a significant burden on health and survival. Right ventricular dysfunction and hemodynamic instability are considered two key determinants of mortality in pulmonary embolism, which can reach up to 65% in severe cases. Therefore, timely diagnosis and management are of paramount importance to ensure the best quality of care. However, hemodynamic and respiratory support, both major constituents of management in pulmonary embolism, associated ...

Ecopetrol's recent Gibraltar discovery was made in a previously little known area of the northern Llanos foothills of the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia. The structure at Gibraltar is complex and comprises a thrust stack with which are associated hangingwall anticlines providing four-way closures (or three-way against a sealing fault). The Gibraltar-I well was originally drilled by Occidental in 2002. According to Ecopetrol's subsequent structural reinterpretation, this well penetrated the back limb ...

Coenzyme Q is an essential component in the activity of the mitochondrial electron transport chain. Its synthesis involves, at least, a complex of ten different proteins. In this study, an attempt is made to determine the evolution of the expression of the genes involved in coenzyme Q synthesis during mouse ageing. The messenger RNA (mRNA) of different organs, such as brain, liver, kidney and skeletal muscle from young (8 months), mature (18 months), and old (24 months) mice was extracted by using Trizol ...

(From "RIMAC: Registry IMAging Cardiopulmonary among Hospitalized COVID-19 Patients in LATAM") Objectives: Describe the use and findings of cardiopulmonary imaging—chest X-ray (cX-ray), echocardiography (cEcho), chest CT (cCT), lung ultrasound (LUS), and/or cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (cMRI)—in COVID-19 hospitalizations in Latin America (LATAM). Background: There is a lack of information on the images used and their findings during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in LATAM. Methods: Multicenter, prospective, ...

Phycobilisomes are protein complexes present in cyanobacteria and red algae; they are involved in light harvesting and conduction of light and the aim of this study has been to understand the high efficiency observed in these processes The structure of the phycobilisome from an eukaryotic algae Gracilaria chilensis was studied by biochemical methods in order to obtain intact phycobilisomes and to obtain their phycobiliprotein components, phycoerythrin, phycocyanin and allophycocyanin. The structure ...

Abstract Ganglioneuroma, a rare benign neuroblastic tumor, typically arises in the posterior mediastinum, but it can be found in the anterior mediastinum and thymus. Predominantly affecting the young, these asymptomatic tumors are often discovered incidentally through imaging. In our reported case, a 44-year-old woman post-hysterectomy with persistent jaundice was diagnosed with a neuroganglioma in the right posterior mediastinum via a computed tomography (CT) scan. Thoracotomy and resection revealed ...

Severe asthma is a serious condition with a significant burden on patients' morbidity, mortality, and quality of life. Some biological therapies targeting the IgE and interleukin-5 (IL5) mediated pathways are now available. Due to the lack of direct comparison studies, the choice of which medication to use varies. We aimed to explore the beliefs and practices in the use of biological therapies in severe asthma, hypothesizing that differences will occur depending on the prescribers' specialty and ...

Background: Acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) is a severe clinical entity associated with elevated short-term mortality. We aimed to characterize patients with decompensated cirrhosis according to presence of ACLF, their association with active alcohol intake, and long-term survival in Latin America. Methods: Retrospective cohort study of decompensated cirrhotic in three Chilean university centers (2017–2019). ACLF was diagnosed according EASL-CLIF criteria. We assessed survival using competing- ...

In this paper, the method of lines for predicting current responses as a function of potential for systems with single or multiple electron transfers, coupled with homogeneous chemical reactions and its implementation in an open-source code written in the freeware programming language Python is presented. The application of this method allows simulating cyclic voltammograms for any proposed mechanism and to obtain concentration profiles for each of the species participating in the reactions. Some ...

The aim of this work is to motivate the use of the method of lines to simulate cyclic voltammograms and to circumvent the use of highly specialized, expensive, commercial software for modeling complex mechanisms of electrochemical reactions coupled to chemical reactions for educational purposes. The method of lines consists of discretizing the partial diffusion equations of the species participating and transform them into a set of ordinary differential equations, from which the concentration profiles ...

ABSTRACT We present the complete mitochondrial genome of Carausius morosus from Salinas, CA. The mitochondrial genome of C. morosus is circular, AT rich (78.1%), and 16,671 bp in length. It consists of 13 protein-coding, 22 transfer RNA, and 2 ribosomal RNA genes and is identical in gene content to Carausius sp.
