We present a technique for the ergonomic assessment of motor tasks and postures. It is based on movement analysis and it integrates the perceived discomfort scores for joints motions and the time involvement of the different body districts. It was tested on 8 subjects performing reaching movements. The experimental protocol was designed to have an a priori expected comfort ranking, namely, higher values in presence of more uncomfortable tasks. The validation of the Method for Movement and Gesture ...

The integration of wind energy into power systems has intensified as a result of the urgency for global energy transition. This requires more accurate forecasting techniques that can capture the variability of the wind resource to achieve better operative performance of power systems. This paper presents an exhaustive review of the state-of-the-art of wind-speed and -power forecasting models for wind turbines located in different segments of power systems, i.e., in large wind farms, distributed generation, ...

Perfusion assessment during septic shock resuscitation is difficult and usually complex determinations. Capillary refill time (CRT) and central-to-toe temperature difference (Tc-toe) have been proposed as objective reproducible parameters to evaluate peripheral perfusion. The comparative evolution of peripheral vs metabolic perfusion parameters in septic shock resuscitation has not been studied. We conducted a prospective observational clinical-physiologic study to address this subject. Patients with ...

Drosophila tracheal terminal branches are plastic and have the capacity to sprout out projections toward oxygen-starved areas, in a process analogous to mammalian angiogenesis. This response involves the upregulation of FGF/Branchless in hypoxic tissues, which binds its receptor Breathless on tracheal cells. Here, we show that extra sprouting depends on the Hypoxia-Inducible Factor (HIF)-α homolog Sima and on the HIF-prolyl hydroxylase Fatiga that operates as an oxygen sensor. In mild hypoxia, Sima ...

Hypoxia-inducible factor alpha (HIF-alpha) proteins are regulated by oxygen levels through several different mechanisms that include protein stability, transcriptional coactivator recruitment, and subcellular localization. It was previously reported that these transcription factors are mainly nuclear in hypoxia and cytoplasmic in normoxia, but so far the molecular basis of this regulation is unclear. We show here that the Drosophila melanogaster HIF-alpha protein Sima shuttles continuously between ...

This work presents a low-cost solution for a neuro-rehabilitation system of stroke patients through a motorized pedal, as pedaling has the potential to provide a high number of flexion and extension repetitions of the lower limb. Stand-alone hardware and software were developed to control the motorized pedal, and the motor imagery recognition is done through a BCI, which analyzes EEG patterns on the motor region, related to feet movements and rest state. From this BCI, an avatar is triggered into ...

A fermiophobic Higgs boson can arise in models with an extended Higgs sector, such as models with scalars in an isospin triplet representation. In a specific model with a scalar triplet and spontaneous violation of lepton number induced by a scalar singlet field, we show that fermiophobia is not a fine-tuned situation, unlike in two higgs doublet models. We study distinctive signals of fermiophobia which can be probed at the LHC. For the case of a small Higgs mass, a characteristic signal would ...

Nitric oxide (NO) is a ubiquitous signaling molecule involved in a wide variety of cellular physiological processes. In thyroid cells, NO-synthase III-endogenously produced NO reduces TSH-stimulated thyroid-specific gene expression, suggesting a potential autocrine role of NO in modulating thyroid function. Further studies indicate that NO induces thyroid dedifferentiation, because NO donors repress TSH-stimulated iodide (I−) uptake. Here, we investigated the molecular mechanism underlying the NO- ...

COVID-19 initially spread among prominent global cities and soon to the urban centers of countries across the globe. While cities are the hotbeds of activities, they also seem highly exposed to global risks including the pandemic. Using the case of COVID-19 and the World Risk Index framework, this paper examines if the leading cities from the global south are inherently vulnerable and exposed to global risks and can they exacerbate the overall risk of their respective nations. Compared against their ...

The Drosophila HIFalpha homologue, Sima, is localized mainly in the cytoplasm in normoxia and accumulates in the nucleus upon hypoxic exposure. We have characterized the mechanism governing Sima oxygen-dependent subcellular localization and found that Sima shuttles continuously between the nucleus and the cytoplasm. We have previously shown that nuclear import depends on an atypical bipartite nuclear localization signal mapping next to the C-terminus of the protein. We show here that nuclear export ...

Introduction: Rarely, both paramedian thalami receive arterial blood flow from a single unilateral vessel arising from the first segment of 1 posterior cerebral artery. This artery has received the name of artery of Percheron (AP). There is no consensus regarding the true prevalence of this anatomical variant. Bilateral paramedian thalamic infarcts are uncommon (0.1% to 2% of ischemic strokes). The main cause is the occlusion of the AP due to cardioembolism. Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging ...

Agmatine (1-amino-4-guanidinobutane), a precursor for polyamine biosynthesis, has been identified as an important neuromodulator with anticonvulsant, antineurotoxic and antidepressant actions in the brain. In this context it has emerged as an important mediator of addiction/satiety pathways associated with alcohol misuse. Consequently, the regulation of the activity of key enzymes in agmatine metabolism is an attractive strategy to combat alcoholism and related addiction disorders. Agmatine results ...
