Inhalation of indoor air pollutants may cause airway irritation and inflammation and is suspected to worsen allergic reactions. Inflammation may be due to mucosal damage, upper (sensory) and lower (pulmonary) airway irritation due to activation of the trigeminal and vagal nerves, respectively, and to neurogenic inflammation. The terpene, d-limonene, is used as a fragrance in numerous consumer products. When limonene reacts with the pulmonary irritant ozone, a complex mixture of gas and particle phase ...

Sea ice breaks up and regenerates rapidly during winter conditions in the Arctic. Analyzing satellite data from the Kara Sea, we find that the average ice floe size depends on weather conditions. Nevertheless, the frequency of floes of size A is a power law, N∼A−τ, where τ=1.6±0.2, for A less than approximately 100km2. This scale-invariant behavior suggests a competition between fracture due to strains in the ice field and refreezing of the fractures. A cellular model for this process gives results ...

Adverse effects from organic mercury transported along aquatic food chains are health issues in humans and other top predators. Methyl mercury in organisms at the lower food chain levels is eliminated slowly, and laboratory studies have not clarified the role of selenium in the retention of methyl mercury in fish. Here, we investigated the effects of dietary selenium on the retention of organic and inorganic mercury in freshwater fish. Addition of selenite to the food augmented elimination of methyl ...

We describe the construction and use of a dodecyl sulfate-sensitive electrode cell to measure the activity of the detergent in biological samples. The electrode is based on the incorporation of a cetyltrimethylammonium/dodecyl sulfate complex in a siloxane polymer membrane. The cell records changes in the activity of SDS from 10−6to 10−5M SDS up to the critical micellar concentration. In aqueous solutions the cell follows Nernst' law with an electrometric response which is not affected by protein ...

Abstract High‐resolution structures of both ribosomal subunits revealed that most stages of protein biosynthesis, including decoding of genetic information, are navigated and controlled by the elaborate ribosomal architectural‐design. Remote interactions govern accurate substrate alignment within a flexible active‐site pocket [peptidyl transferase center (PTC)], and spatial considerations, due mainly to a universal mobile nucleotide, U2585, ensure proper chirality by interfering with D ‐amino‐acids ...

The adsorption-desorption behaviors of Cd and Pb in Lake Chapala sediments were studied through laboratory experiments and computer modelling. Experiments were designed to study the effects of water quality variations observed in the lake over two decades, on the sorption behaviors of these metals. Both Cd and Pb formed outer-sphere complexes with the functional groups on the sediment surface. Overall equilibrium adsorption constants obtained at low ionic strength of experimental background electrolytes ...

Genomes of tumors that are deficient in DNA mismatch repair (dMMR) have high microsatellite instability (MSI-H) and harbor hundreds to thousands of somatic mutations that encode potential neoantigens. Such tumors are therefore likely to be immunogenic, triggering upregulation of immune checkpoint proteins. Pembrolizumab, an anti‒programmed death-1 monoclonal antibody, has antitumor activity against MSI-H/dMMR cancer. We report data from the phase II KEYNOTE-158 study of pembrolizumab in patients with ...

BACKGROUND Although increased height has been associated with osteosarcoma risk in previous epidemiologic studies, to the authors' knowledge the relative contribution of stature during different developmental timepoints remains unclear. Furthermore, the question of how genetic determinants of height impact osteosarcoma etiology remains unexplored. Genetic variants associated with stature in previous genome‐wide association studies may be biomarkers of osteosarcoma risk. METHODS The authors tested ...

Abstract Background Ependymoma is a histologically defined central nervous system tumor most commonly occurring in childhood. Population-level incidence differences by race/ethnicity are observed, with individuals of European ancestry at highest risk. We aimed to determine whether extent of European genetic ancestry is associated with ependymoma risk in US populations. Methods In a multi-ethnic study of Californian children (327 cases, 1970 controls), we estimated the proportions of European, African, ...

This study explored the novel immune checkpoint poliovirus receptor-related immunoglobulin domain-containing (PVRIG) in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). We showed that AML patient blasts consistently expressed the PVRIG ligand (poliovirus receptor-related 2, PVRL2). Furthermore, PVRIG blockade significantly enhanced NK cell killing of PVRL2+, poliovirus receptor (PVR)lo AML cell lines, and significantly increased NK cell activation and degranulation in the context of patient primary AML blasts. However, ...

How infected hosts behave critically affects both their fitness and the transmission, and thus fitness, of their parasites. Understanding host–parasite coevolution therefore requires understanding the factors affecting infected host behaviour. This can usefully be decomposed into the current behavioural expression level and any infection-induced changes in that expression: each of these may have different implications for host and parasite fitness. For example, from the perspective of socially transmitted ...

Abstract LiDAR coverage of a large contiguous area within the Mirador-Calakmul Karst Basin (MCKB) of northern Guatemala has identified a concentration of Preclassic Maya sites (ca. 1000 b.c.–a.d . 150) connected by causeways, forming a web of implied social, political, and economic interactions. This article is an introduction to one of the largest, contiguous, regional LiDAR studies published to date in the Maya Lowlands. More than 775 ancient Maya settlements are identified within the MCKB, and 189 ...

Archaeological and ecological investigations in the Mirador Basin of northern Guatemala have recovered archaeological, phytolith, palynological, and pedological data relevant to the early occupation and development of Maya civilization in a specific environmental matrix. Fluctuation in vegetation types as evident in cores and archaeological profiles suggest that the seasonally wet, forested bajo environment currently found in the northern Peten was anciently more of a perennially wet marsh system ...

Addition of sugar syrups to the basic wort is a popular technique to achieve higher gravity in beer fermentations, but it results in dilution of the free amino nitrogen (FAN) content in the medium. The multicomponent protease enzyme Flavourzyme has beneficial effect on the brewer's yeast fermentation performance during high gravity fermentations as it increases the initial FAN value and results in higher FAN uptake, higher specific growth rate, higher ethanol yield and improved flavour profile. In ...

Abstract An ∼8400 cal yr record of vegetation change from the northern Peten, Guatemala, provides new insights into the environmental history of the archaeological area known as the Mirador Basin. Pollen, loss on ignition, and magnetic susceptibility analyses indicate warm and humid conditions in the early to mid-Holocene. Evidence for a decrease in forest cover around 4600 cal yr B.P. coincides with the first appearance of Zea mays pollen, suggesting that human activity was responsible. The period ...

Complement pathway overactivation can lead to neuronal damage in various neurological diseases. Although Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by β-amyloid plaques and tau tangles, previous work examining complement has largely focused on amyloidosis models. We find that glial cells show increased expression of classical complement components and the central component C3 in mouse models of amyloidosis (PS2APP) and more extensively tauopathy (TauP301S). Blocking complement function by deleting C3 ...

Although checkpoint inhibitors that block CTLA-4 and PD-1 have improved cancer immunotherapies, targeting additional checkpoint receptors may be required to broaden patient response to immunotherapy. PVRIG is a coinhibitory receptor of the DNAM/TIGIT/CD96 nectin family that binds to PVRL2. We report that antagonism of PVRIG and TIGIT, but not CD96, increased CD8+ T-cell cytokine production and cytotoxic activity. The inhibitory effect of PVRL2 was mediated by PVRIG and not TIGIT, demonstrating that ...
