Abstract 6‐Hydroxy‐2,5,7,8‐tetramethylchroman‐2‐carboxylic acid in thin layer tests in vegetable oils and animal fats has two‐four times the antioxidant activity of butylated hydroxytoluene and butylated hydroxyanisole and is more active than propyl gallate, nordihydroquaiaretic acid, ascorbyl palmitate, and α‐ and γ‐tocopherols. It is also more active than tertiary butylhydroquinone in chicken and pork fats and corn, peanut, sunflower, and safflower oils in thin layer tests. Tertiary butylhydroquinone ...

Glucose tolerance tests performed in 15 patients (10 males and 5 females, age range 6-34 years, mean 16 years) with transfusional iron overload revealed fasting and subsequent blood glucose concentrations within the normal range in all except one patients who was overtly diabetic. However, in all patients except one, blood glucose concentration at 2 hours was higher than the respective fasting glucose concentration. All but two of the patients (one of whom was diabetic) showed fasting and post glucose ...

New data have been obtained about the singlet excited states of ammonia in the 5.5–11 eV energy range by electron energy loss spectroscopy. The 50 eV excitation spectrum has been analyzed with high energy resolution (15 meV) at several scattering angles ranging from 4° to 40°. Some known vibrational progressions have been completed by new additional terms with high quantum numbers v′. The differential cross section for the five lowest energy singlet states have been measured at 50 eV impact energy ...

Cancer patients may develop ocular complications secondary to direct or metastatic involvement with cancer, radiation exposure, or chemotherapy. As many as 1.4 million new cancer cases arise in the United States annually.Chemotherapy administration remains a critical aspect of treating many cancers and offers improved prognosis and prolonged survival in many cases; however, these therapies are known to cause a wide range of toxicities.Ocular side effects such as photophobia, cataracts, glaucoma, ...

Triple-negative (TN; estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, and HER-2 negative) cancer and basal-like breast cancer (BLBC) are associated with poor outcome and lack the benefit of targeted therapy. It is widely perceived that BLBC and TN tumors are synonymous and BLBC can be defined using a TN definition without the need for the expression of basal markers. We have used two well-defined cohorts of breast cancers with a large panel of biomarkers, BRCA1 mutation status, and follow-up data to compare ...

Although breast needle core biopsy (NCB) is now a standard diagnostic procedure in the triple assessment of screen-detected breast lesions, data on the false-positive diagnoses of malignancy (malignant NCB 'B5' with normal/benign surgery) are lacking. In this study, we have studied a large series of NCBs (101,440) to assess the causes and pitfalls resulting in false-positive NCB diagnoses and to evaluate their impact on patients' management in the screening service. Our results showed that of 40,395 ...

Pineal gland tumors are rare and account for less than 1% of all primary brain tumor diagnoses. They are more commonly seen in pediatric patients than in adults. We analyzed the available SEER data on pineal gland tumors that were diagnosed during the period 1973–2005. The cohort was subdivided into groups on the basis of tumor histology: germ cell tumors, pineal parenchymal tumors, gliomas, and other pineal tumors. Analyses of incidence, survival, factors influencing survival, and treatment modalities ...

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are essential for the innate immune system of eukaryotes, imparting protection against pathogens and their proliferation in host organisms. The recent interest in AMPs as active materials in bionanostructures is due to the properties shown by these biological molecules, such as the presence of an α-helix structure and distribution of positive charges along the chain. In this study the antimicrobial peptide dermaseptin 01 (DS 01), from the skin secretion of Phyllomedusa ...

Evidence from animal models suggests a role for orexins in reward processing and drug addiction. We further review models of drug dependence and addiction and describe behavioral alterations that are ...
