Since the application of technical medicine by the Greeks, modern neurology has been based on a body of knowledge and cultural heritage from ancient times. In this paper we review the contribution made by Al Andalus to neuroscience during the Middle Ages and its repercussions on modern neurology.Following the death of Mohammed in the vii century AD, Islam enjoyed one of the most spectacular periods of expansion in the history of mankind. Occupation of the cities of Alexandria and Gundishapur put ...

Paloma Moral de Calatrava,

In the Middle Ages, there were different labels to identify those women who took care of other women’s health. ‘Matron’ and ‘obstetrix’ were used in Latin, meanwhile vernacular languages could use a lot of terms. This paper analyzes how long the ideology about female moral was present in the creation of a semantic continuum which overshadowed women’s medical competencies. The therapeutic, but dirty and dishonest task to cause to the patient an orgasm was systematically assigned to the ‘obstetrices’ ...

AbstractBreastfeeding practices exert profound effects on infant and maternal health. This paper explores this for a Medieval English population using a synthesis of skeletal data from the archaeological site at Wharram Percy, England. Duration of breastfeeding was assessed using δ15N levels in infant bones. Infant health was evaluated using bone growth. The aspect of female health investigated was bone mineral density (BMD). Results indicate that duration of weaning was normally about eighteen months. ...

Abstract The prevalence of spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis was studied in an adult skeletal series from a rural English medieval archaeological site. Attempts were made to evaluate the association of three aspects of lumbo‐sacral skeletal morphology (pelvic incidence (a measure of the anterior inclination of the sacral table), lumbar transverse process width, and the presence of lumbo‐sacral spina bifida occulta) with spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis. Results indicated a high prevalence of ...

Abstract Eight individuals with calcified cysts preserved in the thorax and abdomen, one of which had a maximum diameter of 17–20 cm, were recovered during recent excavations at Skriðuklaustur, a medieval monastic site which also functioned as a hospital during its operation from AD 1493–1554 in Eastern Iceland. Hydatid cysts are the result of parasitic infection by Echinococci commonly in the liver and lungs of the accidental human host. Echinococcus granulosus was likely introduced to Iceland ...

Abstract Spondylolysis is generally a condition of the lower lumbar spine, but occasionally it is observed at cranial to L4. It is generally agreed that spondylolysis in the lower lumbar spine represents fatigue failure of the neural arch. However, whether a biomechanical explanation is adequate to explain lesions cranial to L4 is disputed. Morphological aspects of spondylolysis at T12–L3 (five cases) are compared with those of lesions at L4–L6 (24 cases) in a mediaeval English skeletal series with ...

This article presumes that supervision is a category of teaching, and that we all learn how to teach better. So it enquires into what novice supervisors need to learn. An anonymised digital questionnaire sought data from supervisors [n226] on their experiences of supervision to find out what was difficult, and supervisor interviews across campus [n7] sought to discover whether there were discipline differences among challenges. Findings suggest that supervision is often troublesome, and that lessons ...

There is a paucity of surviving texts from ancient and medieval times that can shed light on the early development of spine surgery. Nevertheless, the author reviews many of the available books and fragments and discusses early developments in the field of spine surgery from the point of view of physicians' personalities, general themes, and actual surgical practices. For purposes of an overview and to highlight changing trends in spine surgery, he divides the paper into four eras of medicine: 1) ...

It is not until the fourteenth century that written records offer a glimpse into the coastal societies of Northern Sweden. Records include references to a social stratum referred to as the birkarlar, who were tradesmen engaged in trading with the Sámi. The origin of the birkarlar, their prominent status and the meaning of the term, is an enigma that has been much disputed among scholars although there is consensus about the economic and fiscal supremacy of birkarlar vis-á-vis the Sámi. However, ...
