Primary pulmonary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (PPNHL) of the lung occurs very rarely. To clarify clinical features, treatment alternatives and outcomes, we evaluated our surgically diagnosed PPNHL cases.A retrospective review of PPNHL cases from January 2004 to December 2009 was performed. Demographic and clinical data are presented as means or medians. Overall survival was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. Survival rates were compared using the log-rank test. A p value < 0.05 was considered significant. ...

The presence of synchronous multiple primary non-small-cell lung cancers (SMPLC) is a rare condition and the optimal treatment remains unclear. In this study, the survival of surgically treated SMPLC patients and the factors affecting survival were analyzed.Between 2001 and 2008, 26 consecutive patients diagnosed with SMPLC, who had all of their tumors resected, were retrospectively evaluated. Patients, who had bronchoalveolar carcinoma or carcinoid tumors and satellite nodules, were excluded. Prognostic ...

Due to its rarity there is no clear policy on the management of spontaneous pneumomediastinum (SPM).We treated 23 SPM patients between January 1 996 and November 2 006. There were 20 males and 3 females and their mean age was 27. Clinical records of the patients were collected and analyzed. The most frequent symptoms were neck swelling (n = 20) and rhinolalia (n = 15). Onset of the symptoms was acute. A preceding factor was found in 19 (83 %) patients; these included vigorous cough, forced physical activity, ...

Chronic empyema is not a rare complication of pulmonary tuberculosis. Various treatment modalities ranging from open drainage to pneumonectomy, depending on the status of the disease, have been used to treat this complication. However, the best strategy for this disease remains unknown. This study examined the results of different treatment strategies for chronic tuberculous empyema.Between January 1993 and December 2002, 36 patients (29 male and 7 female) with an average age of 29.3 years (range ...

A solar cell or photovoltaic cell is a device which generates electricity directly from visible light. However, their efficiency is fairly low. So, the solar cell costs expensive according to other energy resources products. Several factors affect solar cell efficiency. This paper presents the most important factors that affecting efficiency of solar cells. These effects are cell temperature, MPPT (maximum power point tracking) and energy conversion efficiency. The changing of these factors improves ...

Low back pain is a highly common problem and causes much morbidity and socioeconomic loss in the community. Although the use of caudal epidural injections in the management of the low back pain with radicular signs is commonplace, it has not been well investigated. We compare the effectiveness of caudal epidural injection versus non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in the treatment of low back pain accompanied with radicular pain. The study was a controlled prospective unblinded trial. The use of exergy is described as a measure for identifying and explaining the benefits of sustainable energy and technologies, so the benefits can be clearly understood and appreciated by experts and non-experts alike, and the utilization of sustainable energy and technologies can be increased. Exergy can be used to assess and improve energy systems, and can help better understand the benefits of utilizing green energy by providing more useful and meaningful information than energy provides. Exergy ...

Massive haemoptysis (600 ml in 24 hours) results in considerable mortality and deserves appropriate management. Since it is life threatening, lung resection remains the surgical treatment of choice in unrelenting haemoptysis. We retrospectively reviewed all patients (n = 29) who were referred to our clinic between January 1994 to September 2001 with massive haemoptysis (> 600 ml/24 h). All patients had uncontrollable haemorrhage and/or failure of conservative treatment. After initial resuscitation, assuring ...

This study aimed to determine the physicochemical properties of the green tea powders produced from 2 different Turkish tea [Camellia sinensis (L.) O.Kuntze] clones (Derepazarı 7 and Fener) grown under different shade levels and harvested during 2 consecutive shooting periods. Moisture, ash, crude fiber, and total phenolic contents of the green tea powders were determined based on the experimental factors. Products were also evaluated for their water activity, bulk density, particle size, color, extraction ...

The water extract of the sage (Salvia fruticosa Miller) was processed into instant soluble sage (ISS) powders by using spray drying at different inlet air temperatures. The ISS was produced by the addition of different carrier materials (β-cyclodextrin, arabic gum and maltodextrin). The moisture content (3–4 g/100 g), water activity (0.23–0.28), bulk density (320–358 kg/m3), and solubility (97–99 g/100 g) of the powders were measured. Different drying temperatures and carrier materials at different concentrations ...

A new composite polynomial is generated, to be used in the trajectory planning of a 2-dof parallel mechanism; by combining cubic polynomials with Bézier curves based on quadratic Bernstein polynomials. By the cubic polynomials, a smooth trajectory is obtained in the vicinity of the starting and ending points, while a better convergence is obtained to the via points by the Bézier curves. The position, velocity, and acceleration profiles obtained using this new polynomial are compared with those obtained ...

Background: This study aims to investigate the treatment modalities and factors influencing survival in surgically treated superior sulcus tumors. Patients and Method: Sixty-five cases of surgically treated non-small cell carcinoma of the lung occurring as superior sulcus tumors between 1994 and 2007 were retrospectively reviewed. Twenty-five patients underwent induction radiotherapy (RT), 10 had induction chemoradiotherapy (CT/RT). In thirty patients surgery was performed directly. The mortality ...

The aim of this study was to compare the oncologic outcomes and complications of patients who underwent carinal resection. Methods Sixty-four patients who underwent carinal resection between 2005 and 2016 were evaluated. Data were retrospectively reviewed for indications, complications, and factors influencing long-term survival. Results The ...

This paper describes ideas and initial experiments in embodied imitation using e-puck robots, developed as part of a project whose aim is to demonstrate the emergence of artificial culture in collective robot systems. Imitated behaviours (memes) will undergo variation because of the noise and heterogeneities of the robots and their sensors. Robots can select which memes to enact, and—because we have a multi-robot collective—memes are able to undergo multiple cycles of imitation, with inherited characteristics. ...

Regulation of gene expression by small non-coding RNAs, such as miRNAs and siRNAs, is an inherent part of complex biological processes that allow function and survival of eukaryotic cells. The type III ribonuclease DICER is widely recognized as a key step in the production of miRNAs and siRNAs, although it also has non-canonical functions such as DNA repair and induction of apoptosis. DICER is at the cornerstone of most biological processes; hence, its mRNA and protein levels are subject to multiple ...

Imitation is an example of social learning in which an individual observes and copies another’s actions. This paper presents a new method for using imitation as a way of enhancing the learning speed of individual agents that employ a well-known reinforcement learning algorithm, namely Q-learning. Compared with other research that uses imitation with reinforcement learning, our method uses imitation of purely observed behaviours to enhance learning, with no internal state access or sharing of experiences ...
