Electric utilities are keenly interested in the promise of fusion: large-scale electricity production anywhere, with virtually no natural resource depletion or environmental pollution. To expedite development of commercially viable fusion systems, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI)—the R&D wing of the U.S. electric utility industry—recently convened a panel of top utility R&D managers and executive officers to identify the key criteria that must be met by fusion plants in order to be acceptable ...

Improving soil structure often reduces furrow erosion and maintains adequate infiltration. Cottage cheese whey, the liquid byproduct from cottage cheese manufacture, was utilized to stabilize soil aggregates and reduce sediment losses from furrow irrigation. We applied either 2.4 or 1.9L of whey per meter of furrow (3.15 or 2.49Lm(-2), respectively) by gravity flow without incorporation to two fields of Portneuf silt loam (Durinodic Xeric Haplocalcid) near Kimberly, ID. Furrows were irrigated with ...

In October 1982, the upper structure and canopy of a 0.09 ha area of mixed species mangrove forest (654 trees) in southeast Florida was removed by tree trimmers. This represented a reduction in mean forest height from 7.1 to 4.8 m. In February 1983, recovery studies were initiated based in part on comparisons with a contiguous untouched mangrove forest. Of some 148 tall Rhizophora mangle trees with an original mean height of 9.0 m, 110 (74%) died within 3 years. Mortality of R. mangle was highest ...

The leaching and degradation of senescent leaves of red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle) immersed in the water column adjacent to a mangrove stand on Virginia Key, Florida were investigated. During the first 70 days the carbon content decreased from 46·2 to 36·2% while the nitrogen content increased from 0·51 to 0·89%. This represented a decrease in the carbon: nitrogen ratio from 90·6 to 40·7. Readily leachable carbohydrates and tanninlike compounds were lost from the leaf material by the 14th and 28th ...
