Abstract Males of the northern midshipman, Porichthys notatus emit sounds that can be characterized as irregular grunts, trains of regularly spaced grunts and buzzes. The grunts contain their maximum amplitude in a band from 85‐600 cps with a possible fundamental just below 85 cps. The buzzes contain frequencies from 85 cps to 1 kc. Some buzzes have a well defined fundamental at approximately 85 cps. In others, the fundamental varies between 150 and 250 cps. Microphonics were recorded from the sacculus ...

Clomiphene citrate in doses which stimulate gonadotropin production in the adult suppresses urinary follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) excretion and plasma testosterone concentration in prepubertal children. Such results indicate that feedback between gonad and hypothalamus is operative and highly sensitive in prepubertal humans. Puberty in man, as in the rat, is accompanied by a decrease in the sensitivity of the feedback mechanism.

Extract: The effect of administering various doses of clomiphene citrate upon gonadotropin excretion and plasma testosterone in 13 prepubertal and 13 pubertal patients of both sexes was evaluated. Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) were measured by the radioimmunoassay of urinary kaolin-acetone extracts. Clomiphene suppressed FSH excretion in two of five prepubertal patients given 0.1 mg/day for 1 week. There were neither stimulatory nor suppressive effects when 0.01 or ...

The urinary gonadotrophin and ovarian steroid excretion pattern was studied in five women taking an oral contraceptive formulation consisting of mestranol 50 mug and norethisterone 1 mg. Both the pretreatment and post-treatment cycles were normal. The ovulatory peak of luteinizing hormone (LH) during the treatment cycles was uniformly suppressed, but LH continued to be excreted within the normal range. In one fifth of the treatment cycles there was a pronounced and sustained rise of oestrogen output ...

Two cases of serosal laceration of the colon during intra-operative, open-abdomen colonoscopy are described. To determine causative factors, intraluminal and intra-abdominal pressures were measured during routine closed-abdomen colonoscopy. Both pressures were found to be low and to increase with the duration of the procedure. During intra-operative open-abdomen colonoscopy increases in intraluminal pressure are unopposed by concomitant increases in intra-abdominal pressure in contrast to circumstances ...
