By simulating the dynamical evolution of Encke particles under planetary perturbations and Poynting‐Robertson drag, we find that millimeter‐sized grains ejected 1–2 ×10 4 years ago encounter Mercury at TAA = 350°–30°. The timing of the excess emission is consistent with a major dust release episode 20 kyr ago, possibly due to Encke progenitor breakup. The emission mechanism is likely the direct injection of impact‐liberated Ca into sunlight rather than nightside surface adsorption for subsequent release at dawn. The timing of dust release from the comet depends on this mechanism; a 10 kyr age ...

Hexavalent chromium compounds are present in the atmosphere and oceans and are established mutagens and carcinogens in human and terrestrial mammals. However, the adverse effects of these toxicants in marine mammals are uncertain. Previously, we reported that North Atlantic right whales, one of the most endangered great whales, have tissue chromium levels that are high, levels that may pose a risk to the whale's health. Furthermore, the study suggested that inhalation may be an important exposure ...

P. L. Israelevich, F. M. Neubauer, A. I. Ershkovich,
Direction of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) which governs the orientation of the Halley's magnetosphere was restored by using Giotto magnetic field data. The Giotto trajectory was a twisted curve in the coordinate system rotating with IMF vector and covered rather uniformly the transverse cross section of the comet. Magnetic field vectors show a regular structure arising from the field line draping about the cometary ionosphere. Violations of the field line draping occur only at the moments ...
