History of the development of the polarographic method from the birth of Professor Jaroslav Heyrovský in 1890 until the Nobel Prize award in 1959 is described. Background of the Nobel Laureate's family and education is given. Factors contributing to the discovery and development of the method are discussed. Polarography is unique among modern analytical methods, as its development is strongly centered around a single personality - J. Heyrovský - and as the timing of experiments leading to its discovery ...

Květoslava Stejskalová, M. Heyrovský,
The historical account follows the story of Jaroslav Heyrovský (1890-1967) from his early secondary school interests in science, to the discovery of polarography, and to the eventual recognition of his accomplishments in chemistry by the Nobel Prize award in 1959. This ECS Classics article was written to commemorate Heyrovský's 125th birthday anniversary. The authors also describe a traveling exhibit that commemorates Heyrovský within the Czech Republic.
