Christianity was born in the context of the Roman Empire, and the temptation to adapt to empire has accompanied Christianity ever since. In more recent times, Methodism has shaped in up the context of the British and U.S. Empires. This essay investigates how empire has shaped theology but it also demonstrates that empire was never able to take over completely and that theology is able to make a difference and resist the status quo.

Methodism was a movement that, as no other, was attentive to the needs of his time. The concern of John Wesley with well-being of humankind is seen in the amplitude of Discussion of Human Rights, which can include the analysis of values of African culture and black assertiveness. Establish a bridge hermeneutic between practice and the Wesleyan Current experience constitutes a challenge to reflect on Methodism and the value of African culture to from Wesley.
