Abstract The insurance industry, like other parts of the financial sector, is vulnerable to climate change. Life as well as non-life products are affected and knowledge of future loss levels is valuable. Risk and premium calculations may be updated accordingly, and dedicated loss-preventive measures can be communicated to customers and regulators. We have established statistical claims models for the coherence between externally inflicted water damage to private buildings in Norway and selected ...

Elisabeth Meze-Hausken,

The aim of this study is to explore the way climate creates thresholds within society. Both human physiology and the human mind determine when and where climate can trigger and influence human activities. By presenting a stimulus-response model, deliberate weather- and climate- related decisions (e.g. migration, clothing) and physiological responses in daily life (e.g. sweating) are placed in a broader theoretical context. While physiological thresholds can be described quantitatively to a certain ...

Recurrent climate hazards challenge subsistence farmers in developing countries. Reliance on various diversification strategies and traditional risk sharing among kin and families has serious limitations, such as the problem of covariate risk within such networks. Index-based crop insurance could help to reduce people's climate-related risk, but raising the necessary capital to make insurance schemes financially secure is difficult for micro-insurance providers. We examine the extent to which spatial ...

This paper is a portrayal of aspects of weather and climate as front-page news in Europe’s rainiest city, Bergen, Norway. It descriptively explores the coverage and different contextualization of weather and climate. By asking the simple question of what actually constitutes a good or bad weather day in Bergen, short-lived weather descriptions in the news are compared with climatological data. The study reveals a complex picture with different annotations of good and bad weather depending on the ...

The study of sorption of water vapour by a tropical wood (Bubinga) at 20 °C, 38 °C, 50 °C and 60 °C has permitted to obtain adsorption and desorption isotherms. Sigmoids have been obtained and they all show hysteresis phenomenon. From these isotherms, we were able to determine Gibbs energy, enthalpy and entropy variations. These variations were analysed and shown to be all negative for adsorption and all positive for desorption, with a great dependence to the moisture content during adsorption and desorption. ...

Summary Climate change will affect the insurance industry. We develop a Bayesian hierarchical statistical approach to explain and predict insurance losses due to weather events at a local geographic scale. The number of weather-related insurance claims is modelled by combining generalized linear models with spatially smoothed variable selection. Using Gibbs sampling and reversible jump Markov chain Monte Carlo methods, this model is fitted on daily weather and insurance data from each of the 319 ...
