We report the characterisation of a multi-planetary system composed of five exoplanets orbiting the K-dwarf HD~23472 (TOI-174). In addition to the two super-Earths that were previously confirmed, we confirm and characterise three Earth-size planets in the system using ESPRESSO radial velocity observations. The planets of this compact system have periods of $P_d \sim 3.98\,$, $P_e \sim 7.90\,$, $P_f \sim 12.16\,$, $P_b \sim 17.67,\,$ and $P_c \sim 29.80\,$days and radii of $R_d \sim 0.75\,$ , $R_e \sim 0.82,$, $R_ ...

Aims. We study the possible atmospheric mass loss from 57 known transiting exoplanets around F, G, K, and M-type stars over evolutionary timescales. For stellar wind induced mass loss studies, we estimate the position of the pressure balance boundary between Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) and stellar wind ram pressures and the planetary ionosphere pressure for non- or weakly magnetized gas giants at close orbits. Methods. The thermal mass loss of atomic hydrogen is calculated by a mass loss equation where ...

Context. The associations and moving groups of young stars are excellent laboratories for investigating stellar formation in the solar neighborhood. Previous results have confirmed that a non-negligible fraction of old main-sequence stars is present in the lists of possible members of young stellar kinematic groups. A detailed study of the properties of these samples is needed to separate the young stars from old main-sequence stars with similar space motion, and identify the origin of these structures. ...

Accretion shocks have been recognized as important X-ray emission mechanism for pre-main sequence stars. Yet the X-ray properties of FUor outbursts, events that are caused by violent accretion, have been given little attention. We have observed the FUor object Z CMa during optical outburst and quiescence with Chandra. No significant changes in X-ray brightness and spectral shape are found, suggesting that the X-ray emission is of coronal nature. Due to the binary nature of Z CMa the origin of the ...

Aims. We study the relative role of EUV and X-ray radiation in the heating of hydrogen-rich planet atmospheres with different composition and electron content. Methods. An accurate photo-ionization model has been used to follow the primary photo-electron energy deposition throughout the atmosphere. Results. Heating rates and efficiencies have been computed, together with column density cut-offs at which photons of given energies stop their heating production inside the atmosphere. Assuming 100 eV as ...

X-ray luminosities of accreting T Tauri stars are observed to be systematically lower than those of non-accretors. There is as yet no widely accepted physical explanation for this effect, though it has been suggested that accretion somehow suppresses, disrupts or obscures coronal X-ray activity. Here, we suggest that the opposite might be the case: coronal X-rays modulate the accretion flow. We re-examine the X-ray luminosities of T Tauri stars in the Orion Nebula Cluster and find that not only ...

Context. The infrared [Ne II] and [Ne III] fine structure lines at 12.81 μ m and 15.55 μ m have recently been theoretically predicted to trace the circumstellar disk gas subject to X-ray heating and ionization. Aims. We observationally investigate the origin of the neon fine structure line emission by comparing observations with models of X-ray irradiated disks and by searching for empirical correlations between the line luminosities and stellar and circumstellar parameters. Methods. We select a ...

Context. The observations of the proplyds in the Orion Nebula Cluster, exhibiting clear evidence of ongoing photoevaporation, have provided clear proof of the role of externally induced photoevaporation in the evolution of circumstellar disks. NGC 6611 is an open cluster suitable for study of disk photoevaporation, due to its significant population of massive members and stars with disk. In a previous paper, we obtained evidence of the influence of the strong UV field generated by the massive cluster members ...

We revisit the published analyses of ROSAT X-ray observations of the star forming regions NGC 2264 and Chamaeleon I (∼3 and ∼5 Myr old respectively) in the light of newly published optical data. At odds with previous results on Chamaeleon I members, we find that low mass stars in both regions have near-saturated emission levels. Similarly to what previously found in the Orion Nebula Cluster, Weak Line T-Tauri Stars in NGC 2264 and in the Chamaeleon I cloud have higher X-ray activity levels respect ...

We have for the first time detected X-ray emission associated with a protostellar jet, on the jet emanating from the L1551 IRS5 protostar. The IRS5 protostar is hidden behind a very large absorbing column density, making the direct observation of the jet's emission possible. The observed X-ray emission is likely associated with the shock "working surface", i.e. the interface between the jet and the circumstellar medium. The X-ray luminosity emanating from the jet is, at erg s-1, a significant fraction ...

All the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) observations of AD Leo, totalling 1.1 Ms of exposure time, have been employed to analyze the corona of this single M dwarf. The light curves show a well defined quiescent stage, and a distribution of amplitude of variability following a power law with a ~-2.4 index. The flaring behavior exhibits much similarity with other M active stars like FK Aqr or YY Gem, and flares behave differently from late type active giants and subgiants. We present the results of a new study on the relationship between coronal X-ray emission and stellar rotation in late-type main-sequence stars. We have selected a sample of 259 dwarfs in the range 0.5–2.0, including 110 field stars and 149 members of the Pleiades, Hyades, α Persei, IC 2602 and IC 2391 open clusters. All the stars have been observed with ROSAT, and most of them have photometrically-measured rotation periods available. Our results confirm that two emission regimes exist, one in which ...
