Bacteriophage T7 has developed an efficient and rapid mechanism for the replication of its chromosome. Using this relatively simple organism, it is possible to elucidate the molecular and enzymatic mechanisms responsible for the replication of a linear, duplex DNA molecule (Richardson et al. 1979; Tamanoi et al. 1980b; Tabor et al. 1981). Furthermore, many steps in the replication of the T7 DNA molecule resemble events known to occur during the replication of the larger, more complex bacterial and ...

The hypothesis that early social isolation results in long-term alterations in dopamine receptor sensitivity was tested using older adult rhesus monkeys. Isolated and control monkeys were challenged with apomorphine (0.1 and 0.3 mg/kg), and the drug effects on spontaneous blink rate, stereotyped behavior, and self-injurious behavior were quantified using observational measures. Monoamine metabolites were quantified from cisternal CSF by HPLC-EC, prior to pharmacological challenge. Isolated and control ...

Consumption of ethanol solutions by rodents in two-bottle choice tests is a model to study human alcohol intake. Mice of the C57BL/6ByJ strain have higher ethanol preferences and intakes than do mice of the 129P3/J strain. F 2 hybrids between these two strains were phenotyped using two-bottle tests involving a choice between water and either 3% or 10% ethanol. High ethanol preferences and intakes of the B6 mice were inherited as additive or dominant traits in the F 2 generation. A genome screen ...

Faced with sudden environmental changes, animals must either adapt to novel environments or go extinct. Thus, study of the mechanisms underlying rapid adaptation is crucial not only for the understanding of natural evolutionary processes but also for the understanding of human-induced evolutionary change, which is an increasingly important problem [1Palumbi S.R. Heterozygous mutations in FOXP2, which encodes a forkhead transcription factor, have been shown to cause developmental verbal dyspraxia and language impairment. FOXP2 and its closest homolog, FOXP1, are coexpressed in brain regions that are important for language and cooperatively regulate developmental processes, raising the possibility that FOXP1 may also be involved in developmental conditions that are associated with language impairment. In order to explore this possibility, we searched for ...

Abstract Traumatic brain injury (TBI) in children results in damage to the developing brain, particularly in severely injured individuals. Little is known, however, of the long‐term structural aspects of the brain following childhood TBI. This study investigated the integrity of the brain 10 years post‐TBI using magnetic resonance imaging volumetrics in a sample of 49 participants with mild, moderate and severe TBI, evaluated against a normative sample of 20 individuals from a pediatric database ...

Cranial CT scans are at the center of decision making in brain injuries in children because of their speed and ability to detect surgically relevant lesions. However, alternative techniques, such as conventional MRI may have advantages in terms of radiation exposure and sensitivity to detect brain injury. Susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI), a relatively novel MRI sequence, shows promise in terms of its sensitivity in detecting hemorrhagic lesions; however, its clinical potential remains uncertain. ...
