Background Recurrent preschool wheezing is a heterogeneous disorder with significant morbidity, yet little is known about phenotypic determinants and their impact on clinical outcomes. Objective Latent class analysis (LCA) was used to identify latent classes of recurrent preschool wheeze and their association with future exacerbations and inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) treatment response. Methods Data from 5 clinical trials of 1708 children aged 12 to 71 months with recurrent wheezing were merged. LCA ...

In the following paper, we discuss new methods to trap and manipulate airborne liquid aerosol droplets. We discuss the single gradient force trapping of water aerosols in the 2–14 micron diameter range using both 532 nm and 1064 nm light, as well as the holographic optical trapping of arrays of aerosols. Using this holographic technique, we are able to show controlled aerosol coagulation. We also discuss two techniques based on the radiation pressure trapping of aerosols, namely the dual beam fibre ...

Selecting research mentors for students, fellows, and K scholars is an important process. K scholars in particular represent unique trainees that require a different kind of mentoring compared to students and postdoctoral research fellows. K scholars are usually appointed as assistant professors or assistant scientists and are expected to develop independent research programs as quickly as possible. However they are vulnerable from a number of perspectives including their relative inexperience in ...

Summary A model is presented for calculating the environmental burdens of the part manufacturing and vehicle assembly (VMA) stage of the vehicle life cycle. The model is based on a process‐level approach, accounting for all significant materials by their transformation processes (aluminum castings, polyethylene blow molding; etc.) and plant operation activities (painting; heating, ventilation, and air conditioning [HVAC], etc.) germane to VMA. Using quantitative results for these material/transformation ...

Reduction of litter N and ammonia production can be accomplished by decreasing dietary CP to levels below the requirements listed by the National Research Council. However, amino acids must be added to low CP diets to obtain satisfactory growth performance. It is important to know what levels of amino acid supplementation are required in low CP diets to avoid decreased growth performance and feeding excess amounts of expensive ingredients. Two studies were conducted to determine if further supplementation ...

Background Infections caused by carbapenem-resistant gram-negative bacilli are an emerging public health threat. However, there is a paucity of data examining comparative incidence rates, risk factors, and outcomes in this population. Methods This single-center retrospective cohort study was conducted at an urban tertiary-care academic medical center. We included patients admitted from 2012 to 2015 who met the following criteria: i) age ≥ 18 years; and ii) culture positive for carbapenem-resistant ...

In a retrospective analysis of 215 patients with carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa sepsis, we observed a significantly higher risk of mortality associated with respiratory tract infection (risk ratio [RR], 1.20; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.04 to 1.39; P = 0.010) and lower risk with urinary tract infection (RR, 0.80; 95% CI, 0.71 to 0.90; P = 0.004). Aminoglycoside monotherapy was associated with increased mortality, even after adjusting for confounders (adjusted RR, 1.72; 95% CI, 1.03 to 2. ...

Geoffery Engel, Steven J. Burnham, Michael F. Carter,

Identification of specific etiologies of erectile impotence is hindered by a paucity of objective criteria needed to segregate organic from psychogenic varieties and to define specific organic causes. Simplified measurement of penile blood pressure was performed with a digital cuff and a portable ultrasound Doppler system for flow detection. An index relating penile-to-brachial systolic blood pressure was generated, and the results were compared in patients with impotence versus patients with normal ...

Researchers at Argonne National Laboratory expanded the Greenhouse gases, Regulated Emissions, and Energy use in Transportation (GREET) model and incorporated the fuel economy and electricity use of alternative fuel/vehicle systems simulated by the Powertrain System Analysis Toolkit (PSAT) to conduct a well-to-wheels (WTW) analysis of energy use and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). The WTW results were separately calculated for the blended charge-depleting (CD) ...

Metal 1,4,8,11,15,18,22,25-octakis(hexylsulfanyl)phthalo-cyanines exhibit a weak absorption band in the 450–600 nm region, leading to novel dyes that include the red lead metallated derivative that has been characterised by X-ray crystallography.
