Alterations in two highly conserved N-linked glycosylation sites within the gp120 envelope glycoprotein of human immunodeficiency virus type I (HIV-1) implicated in the phenotype of a noncytopathic HIV-1 variant were introduced independently and in combination into a cytopathic, infectious HIV-1 clone by site-specific mutagenesis. Neither mutation affected the synthesis of HIV-1 envelope glycoproteins. However, one of the mutations restricted the ability of HIV-1 envelope to localize on the cell ...

Francisella tularensis subsp. holarctica is widely disseminated in North America and the boreal and temperate regions of the Eurasian continent. Comparative genomic analyses identified a 1.59-kb genomic deletion specific to F. tularensis subsp. holarctica isolates from Spain and France. Phylogenetic analysis of strains carrying this deletion by multiple-locus variable-number tandem repeat analysis showed that the strains comprise a highly related set of genotypes, implying that these strains were ...

Cyber technology provides a new venue for the expression of aggression. However, whether cyber technology has produced a new group of peer aggressors or simply allowed aggressive peers new tools to victimize others is unclear. This study sampled 1,672 adolescents to assess their engagement in cyber aggression. Although "cyber," "overt," and "relational" represent distinct subtypes of aggressive behavior, our results indicate that adolescents' behaviors clustered according to their frequency-not type- ...

An adult patient is described with hepatomegaly and sea‐blue histiocytes in the bone marrow. A diagnosis of cholesterol ester storage disease was established following enzyme and lipid analyses on liver biopsy and cultured skin fibroblasts. Acid esterase activity was deficient (approx. 5% of controls) in liver and fibroblasts using [ 14 C]‐triolein or 4‐methylumbelliferyl palmitate as substrates. Cholesterol ester levels were raised about 70‐fold in liver, whereas triglyceride levels were only marginally ...

Ian Dempsey, Michael Arthur‐Kelly, Breda Carty,
For some time, special education has been plagued by shortages of qualified teaching staff and by high turnover rates for these staff. While several factors—external, employment and personal—are largely responsible for this situation, the research demonstrates that the initial professional experiences of early career teachers are closely associated with their longevity in the field. This paper reviews the literature on mentoring support for beginning teachers, mentoring models and the use of information ...

Abstract The increasing use of cyberspace as a social networking forum creates a new medium for youth to become victims of peer aggression. This study used factor analysis techniques to confirm whether survey questions about frequency of cyber victimization formed a distinct latent construct from questions about relational and overt victimization information in a large ( N = 1,665) sample of middle school students. A secondary goal was to relate experiences of cyber victimization to symptoms of depression ...
