Abstract In 2014, samples from 37 monitoring wells at 17 locations, within or near oil fields, and one site >5 km from oil fields, in the Los Angeles Basin, California, were analyzed for dissolved hydrocarbon gas isotopes and abundances. The wells sample a variety of depths of an aquifer system composed of unconsolidated and semiconsolidated sediments under various conditions of confinement. Concentrations of methane in groundwater samples ranged from 0.002 to 150 mg/L—some of the highest concentrations ...

Lynton S. Land Michael Amdurer,

ABSTRACT The Sand Bulge area of the Laguna Madre Flats is a silicoclastic coastal sabkha lying between Padre Island and the Intracoastal Waterway on the Gulf coast of southwest Texas. The sabkha is sporadically inundated by wind-tidal flooding of water from an adjacent lagoon (Laguna Madre). Saline interstitial brines are formed by infiltration of partially evaporated ponded flood water. Manometric data indicate that the brine seeps downward through the sabkha and laterally, west toward the Intracoastal ...

Objective. African Americans currently bear the greatest burden of morbidity and mortality due to smoking, and exposure to pro-tobacco media messages predicts smoking. This study compared the concentration (proportion of media messages that are for tobacco) and density (pro-tobacco media messages per person) of pro-tobacco media messages between African American and Caucasian markets. Methods. We searched Medline (1966 to June 2006), PsychINFO (1974 to June 2006), and CINAHL (1982 to June 2006) for studies ...

Objectives To develop a smoking media literacy (SML) scale by using empiric survey data from a large sample of high school students and to assess reliability and criterion validity of the scale. Design On the basis of an established theoretical framework, 120 potential items were generated, and items were eliminated or altered on the basis of input from experts and students. Cross-sectional responses to scale items, demographics, smoking-related variables, and multiple covariates were obtained to refine the ...

To determine whether media literacy concerning tobacco use is independently associated with two clinically relevant outcome measures in adolescents: current smoking and susceptibility to smoking. We asked high school students aged 14-18 years to complete a survey that included a validated 18-item smoking media literacy (SML) scale, items assessing current smoking and susceptibility to future smoking, and covariates shown to be related to smoking. We used logistic regression to assess independent associations ...

Abstract TEL gene rearrangement is the most common genetic lesion in pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), occurring in about 25% of B-lineage cases. We previously showed that, among patients treated on St Jude protocols, TEL rearrangement independently conferred an excellent prognosis. To extend these results to patients treated with antimetabolite-based therapy, we performed Southern blot analysis to determine the TEL gene status of 104 cases of B-lineage ALL treated on Pediatric Oncology ...

Melanoma is one of the most aggressive types of skin cancer and in many cases it is difficult to differentiate from benign naevi. In this contribution we present a decision support (expert) system, which we call MED-NODE, able to assist physicians with this challenging task. The proposed system makes use of non-dermoscopic digital images of lesions from which it automatically extracts the lesion regions and then computes descriptors regarding the color and texture. In addition, a set of visual attributes ...
