We have detected a disorder in Korat cats (initially imported from Thailand) that is analogous to human Sandhoff's disease. Pedigree analysis indicates that this disease in an autosomal recessive disorder in the American Korat. Postmortem studies on one affected cat showed hepatomegaly that was not reported in the only other known feline model of GM2-gangliosidosis type II. Histologic and ultra-structural evaluation revealed typical storage vacuoles. There was a marked deficiency in the activity ...

Spontaneously hypertensive (SH) and normotensive Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats have been used for understanding the mechanisms of variations in susceptibility to airborne pollutants. We examined the lung burden of diesel exhaust particles (DEP) following inhalation of diesel engine exhaust (DEE) in both strains. The kinetics of clearance was also examined after single intratracheal (IT) instillation of DEP. Lungs were analyzed for DEP elemental carbon (EC) after exposure to DEE (0, 500, or 2000 μg/m3 4 h/day, ...

Adult right hepatic lobe living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) has rapidly gained widespread acceptance as an effective procedure for selected patients with end-stage liver disease. However, there are currently no published data on the effect of this procedure on the quality of life of donors. We report the results of a survey of our living liver transplant donors to determine the effect of right hepatic lobe donation on quality of life. We have performed 30 LDLTs since 1997; 24 of these have ...

A novel GPR119 agonist based on the 2,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrazole scaffold was designed through lead optimization starting from pyrazole-based GPR119 agonist 1. The design is centered on the conformational restriction of the core scaffold, while minimizing the change in spatial relationships of two key pharmacophoric elements (piperidine-carbamate and aryl sulfone).

Time-of-flight range imaging is typically performed with the amplitude modulated continuous wave method. This involves illuminating a scene with amplitude modulated light. Reflected light from the scene is received by the sensor with the range to the scene encoded as a phase delay of the modulation envelope. Due to the cyclic nature of phase, an ambiguity in the measured range occurs every half wavelength in distance, thereby limiting the maximum useable range of the camera. This paper proposes ...

Adenocarcinoma of the esophagus has increased dramatically within the United States and continues to have a poor prognosis despite aggressive treatment. Identifying potential risk factors is critical for the early detection and treatment of this disease. The present case report describes a very young woman who developed adenocarcinoma of the esophagus after only a brief history of bulimia. These findings suggest that even in very young patients, bulimia may represent a risk factor for adenocarcinoma ...

A winter survey for scale insects of Tsuga canadensis Carrière, Eastern hemlock, at 279 sites in 31 towns in Fairfield and New Haven Counties, CT, indicated that Fiorinia externa Ferris and Tsugaspidiotus tsugae (Marlatt) (Homoptera: Diaspididae) are serious pests throughout much of the area. A 3rd diaspidid scale, Phenacaspis pinifoliae (Fitch), occurred only in low densities at 4 sites and was not considered a pest of hemlock. The heaviest infestation of F. externa was in the town of Greenwich where ...

Abstract We have found that the specific activity of phenylalanine hydroxylase varies over at least a forty-fold range during the growth cycle of Reuber hepatoma (H4) cells growing in monolayer culture. The variation has three phases: (1) a very rapid drop in specific activity upon subculturing to a low cell density; (2) a region of low specific activity and (3) after confluency, a rise to a high specific activity. All the results indicate that the cell density in the culture dish is primarily responsible ...

The clinical feasibility of assessing testicular metabolic integrity with phosphorus-31 magnetic resonance (MR) spectroscopy was investigated in six healthy volunteers and 23 patients with azoospermia. MR spectroscopic findings were compared with sperm count and motility in all patients and with findings at testicular biopsy in 23 patients. Significant differences (P less than .05) were found between the P-31 spectra of normal and azoospermic testicles in the following peak area ratios: phosphomonoester ( ...
