High quality single crystals of neodymium doped barium fluorapatite have been grown by the Czochralski technique and evaluated as an optical gain medium. A product of the emission cross section and lifetime of Nd3+ luminescence of more than 1.8×10−22 cm2 s at 1055 nm, and laser performance with slope efficiency up to 65% have been obtained.

Pituitary stalk interruption syndrome (PSIS, ORPHA95496) is a congenital defect of the pituitary gland characterized by the triad of a very thin/interrupted pituitary stalk, an ectopic (or absent) posterior pituitary gland, and hypoplasia or aplasia of the anterior pituitary gland. Complex genetic patterns of inheritance of this disorder are increasingly recognized. The objective of this study was to identify a genetic cause of PSIS in an affected child. Whole exome sequencing (WES) was performed by ...

Article Abstract ‹Subtypes of depression need to be recognized and diagnosed in order to properly treat patients who have depression but present with different symptoms from one another. Different pharmacotherapuetic strategies may work better for different subtypes. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) have been studied for the treatment of atypical depression. ...

The SNePS knowledge representation, reasoning, and acting system has several features that facilitate metacognition in SNePS-based agents. The most prominent is the fact that propositions are represented in SNePS as terms rather than as sentences, so that propositions can occur as argu- ments of propositions and other expressions without leaving first-order logic. The SNePS acting subsystem is integrated with the SNePS reasoning subsystem in such a way that: there are acts that affect what an agent ...

We report the implementation of a new, high brightness, high efficiency white-light source based on up-conversion phosphors. Up-conversion materials absorb near infrared light and re-emit in red, green, and blue. It is possible to combine these colors to create a white-light source. Such a source has the same appealing characteristics as those reported for up-conversion displays: very high brightness operation without damage to the emitters, long lifetimes, and efficiencies comparable to those of ...

A simple method for doubling the laser emission efficiency of Nd:yttrium-aluminum-garnet pumped cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) photonic band edge lasers is demonstrated. By adding a mirror or a CLC reflector behind the dye-doped CLC cell, the lasing intensity is nearly doubled. For the mirror reflector, due to the mixing of right-handed and left-handed circular polarizations, the output laser is basically unpolarized. However, for the CLC reflector, a partially coherent laser can be built in which ...

Porin, also termed the voltage-dependent anion channel, is the most abundant protein of the mitochondrial outer membrane. The process of import and assembly of the protein is known to be dependent on the surface receptor Tom20, but the requirement for other mitochondrial proteins remains controversial. We have used mitochondria from Neurospora crassa and Saccharomyces cerevisiae to analyze the import pathway of porin. Import of porin into isolated mitochondria in which the outer membrane has been ...

Fzo1p is a novel component required for the biogenesis of functional mitochondria in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The protein is homologous to DrosophilaFzo, the first known protein mediator of mitochondrial fusion. Deletion of the FZO1 gene results in a petite phenotype, loss of mitochondrial DNA, and a fragmented mitochondrial morphology. Fzo1p is an integral protein of the mitochondrial outer membrane exposing its major part to the cytosol. It is imported into the outer membrane in a receptor- ...

Contextual vocabulary acquisition (CVA) is the active, deliberate acquisition of a meaning for an unknown word in a text by reasoning from textual clues, prior knowledge, and hypotheses developed from prior encounters with the word, but without external sources of help such as dictionaries or people. Published strategies for CVA vaguely and unhelpfully tell the reader to 'guess'. Artificial intelligence algorithms for CVA can fill in the details that replace 'guessing' by 'computing'; these details ...

Abstract Nonclassic actions of vitamin D include potential regulation of immune function and glucose homeostasis. The bone-metabolism loop has recently been expanded to include osteocalcin, which appears to play a more direct role in pancreatic beta cell function and energy metabolism. We analyzed anthropometric, metabolic, ...

Protein misfolding is linked to different neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's disease, polyglutamine, and prion diseases. We investigated the cytotoxic effects of aberrant conformers of the prion protein (PrP) and show that toxicity is specifically linked to misfolding of PrP in the cytosolic compartment and involves binding of PrP to the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2. Experimental spectroscopic investigations of the absorption and luminescence properties of Er3+ ions doped into single crystals of the tetragonal-symmetry host LuPO4 are reported.
