Agonism of protease-activated receptor (PAR) 1 by activated protein C (APC) provides neuro- and vasculoprotection in experimental neuroinjury models. The pleiotropic PAR1 agonist, 3K3A-APC, reduces neurological injury and promotes vascular integrity; 3K3A-APC proved safe in human volunteers. We performed a randomized, controlled, blinded trial to determine the maximally tolerated dose (MTD) of 3K3A-APC in ischemic stroke patients.

We introduce the AusTraits database - a compilation of values of plant traits for taxa in the Australian flora (hereafter AusTraits). AusTraits synthesises data on 448 traits across 28,640 taxa from field campaigns, published literature, taxonomic monographs, and individual taxon descriptions. Traits vary in scope from physiological measures of performance (e.g. photosynthetic gas exchange, water-use efficiency) to morphological attributes (e.g. leaf area, seed mass, plant height) which link to aspects ...

Intraspecific variation in biomass production responses to elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (eCO2) could influence tree species' ecological and evolutionary responses to climate change. However, the physiological mechanisms underlying genotypic variation in responsiveness to eCO2 remain poorly understood. In this study, we grew 17 Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh. subsp. camaldulensis genotypes (representing provenances from four different climates) under ambient atmospheric CO2 and eCO2. We tested ...

Abstract. Soils in Arctic regions currently enjoy attention because of their sensitivity to climate change. It is therefore important to understand the natural processes and rates of development of these soils. Specifically, there is a need to quantify the rates and interactions between various landscape- and soil-forming processes. Soil chronosequences are ideal natural experiments for this purpose. In this contribution, we combine field observations, luminescence dating and soil–landscape modelling ...

The use of cryotherapy after total knee arthroplasty is a very common therapeutic adjunct accepted as routine postoperative care. We present 2 cases of total patellar skin loss due to cryotherapy after total knee arthroplasty. Substantial soft tissue defects were created after the initial debridement of the necrotic tissue. Both patients were evaluated for frostbite, and the wounds were sharply debrided. Application of an advanced wound management technique involves the use of a collagen-glycosaminoglycan ...

The rat femoral artery (RFA) anastomosis model has been the gold standard in microsurgical simulation training. While effective, live animal use requires animal use committee regulation and costly maintenance. Our institution's animal laboratory is remote to the hospital, limiting access by our busy surgical residents with their limited duty hours. We present an alternative convenient, cost-effective model. Ten frozen turkey wings were divided into distal and proximal segments. Vessel diameter, length, ...

This review summarizes current evidence regarding the validation of PROMs in people with symptomatic, nonlimb-threatening peripheral artery disease. A literature search was conducted to identify studies of symptomatic peripheral artery disease without limb-threatening ischemia that included PROMs and had sample ...

We summarise case studies of diseases that have affected wildlife ...
