Philadelphia chromosome-positive (Ph+) B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) expressing BCR-ABL1 oncoprotein is a major subclass of ALL with poor prognosis. BCR-ABL1-expressing leukemic cells are highly dependent on double-strand break (DSB) repair signals for their survival. Here we report that a first-in-class HDAC1,2 selective inhibitor and doxorubicin (a hyper-CVAD chemotherapy regimen component) impair DSB repair networks in Ph+ B-cell precursor ALL cells using common as well as distinct ...

Cross-country integration of banking in Europe typically has been analyzed from the perspective of particular markets for financial products. We extend this research to consider the potential effects of market integration on the portfolio choices and financial structure of banks in seven European countries, 1994–2002. Our evidence rejects a hypothesis that banks in different countries have common activities. Distinct portfolio choices are more evident among small banks, as opposed to big banks, ...

Between February 1984 and September 1990, 60 patients with brainstem gliomas were treated with hyperfractionated radiotherapy in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of California, San Francisco. Forty-one children (< or = 18 years) and 19 adults were treated with 100 cGy twice daily with 4-8 hr between doses. Thirty-one patients (21 children and 10 adults) received total doses of 66-72 Gy and 29 patients (20 children and nine adults) received 74-78 Gy. Median follow-up was 208 weeks ...

Brain metastases are an alarming complication of advanced melanoma, frequently contributing to patient demise. The authors performed a retrospective analysis to determine whether the treatment of metastatic melanoma with biochemotherapy would result in similar outcomes if brain metastases were first controlled with aggressive, central nervous system (CNS)-directed treatment.Seventy melanoma patients were treated with biochemotherapy for metastatic melanoma between 1999 and 2005. Of these, 20 patients ...

Object Determining accurate target volume is critical for both prescribing and evaluating stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) treatments. The aim of this study was to determine the reliability of contour-based volume calculations made by current major SRS platforms. Methods Spheres ranging in diameter from 6.4 to 38.2 mm were scanned and then delineated on imaging studies. Contour data sets were subsequently exported to 6 SRS treatment-planning platforms for volume calculations and comparisons. This ...

We hypothesize that fundamental features that distinguish European capital markets have predictably influenced emerging national differences in bank capitalization and loan growth. Using bank‐level data from 13 European countries, 1998 to 2004, we find evidence of positive effects of “equity‐friendly” market features on bank capitalization and positive effects of both “equity‐friendly” and “credit‐friendly” market features on loan growth. The findings are strongest in small banks and in banks with ...

Four research issues are identified that highlight the contrasting perspectives of strategic management and finance on event-study methodology. These issues then are used to evaluate five finance procedures used to calculate market-based performance measures. In each case, alternative procedures are recommended to make these measures more relevant both conceptually and statistically, for strategic management research.

Most empirical research in industrial organization has taken market structure as given and related structural variables to various aspects of performance [15]. In addition to the effects of structure on performance, there are, however, likely to be important feedback effects of performance on structure. Thus, a complete analysis of performance should be based on a fundamental analysis of the determinants of market structure-the central goal of this paper. Previous studies have typically collapsed ...

OBJECTIVE: To determine the outcome and toxicity in patients with vestibular schwannomas treated with conventionally fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) and to identify prognostic factors that are predictive of outcome. METHODS: Between 1992 and 2001, 70 patients with vestibular schwannomas were treated with linear accelerator-based SRT in our institutions. Eleven patients had neurofibromatosis Type II (NF2). The median age was 53 years (range, 17–82 yrs). The median tumor volume was 2.4 cm3 ( ...

Purpose: Brain metastases of melanoma, renal carcinoma, and sarcoma have traditionally responded poorly to conventional treatments, including surgery and whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT). Several studies have suggested a beneficial effect of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). We evaluated our institutional experience with systematic SRS in patients harboring these "radioresistant" metastases. Methods and Materials: A total of 68 patients with brain metastases from melanoma, renal carcinoma, and sarcoma ...

Patients with refractory/relapsed non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) often receive high-dose chemotherapy (HDCT) followed by hematopoietic progenitor cell transplant (HPCT) as salvage therapy. We examined the role of involved field radiation therapy (IFRT) in this setting. The records of 167 patients with refractory/relapsed NHL who underwent HDCT followed by HPCT between February 1990 and November 2003 were reviewed. Fifty-three patients received IFRT and 114 did not receive IFRT in the peritransplant period. ...

Abstract Purpose: Between June 1988 and June 1994, 38 hemangioblastomas were treated with stereotactic radiosurgery (SR) at three SR centers to evaluate the efficacy and potential toxicity of this therapeutic modality as an adjuvant or alternative treatment to surgical resection. Methods and Materials: SR was performed using either a 201-cobalt source unit or a dedicated SR linear accelerator. Of the 18 primary tumors treated, 16 had no prior history of surgical resection and were treated definitively with ...

In the year 2005, an estimated 18,500 new cases of primary brain and nervous system neoplasms will be diagnosed in the United States. These tumors will be responsible for approximately 12,760 deaths. The incidence of primary malignant brain tumors has been increasing over the past 25 years, especially in elderly persons (rates are increasing at about 1.2% each year). Metastatic disease to the central nervous system (CNS) occurs much more frequently, with an incidence about 10 times that of primary ...

Abstract This paper addresses the relationship between the capital structure and the systematic risk of common equity for a firm whose capital structure includes convertible securities. Adding warrants to the capital structure reduces the systematic risk of equity, which is consistent with the fact that warrants dampen the volatility of equity by reducing the upside potential gains of existing stockholders. Expressions showing the impact of conversion features in debt and preferred stock on the ...

With advances in the understanding of histopathology on outcome, accurate meningioma grading becomes critical and drives treatment selection. The 2000 and 2007 WHO schema greatly increased the proportion of grade II meningiomas. Although associations with progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) have been independently validated, interobserver concordance has not been formally assessed. Once mature, NRG Oncology RTOG-0539 will report PFS and OS in variably treated low-, intermediate-, ...

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the number of newly diagnosed prostate cancers in the United States increased dramatically, surpassing lung cancer as the most common cancer in men. 1 Experts generally believe that these changes resulted from prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening that detected many earlystage prostate cancers. For example, the percentage of patients with low-risk disease has increased (45.3% in 1999-2001 vs. 29.8% in 1989-1992; P < .0001). 2 The incidence of prostate cancer increased ...
