Model-based engineering tools are increasingly being used for system-level development of safety-critical systems. Architectural and behavioral models provide important information that can be leveraged to improve the system safety analysis process. Model-based design artifacts produced in early stage development activities can be used to perform system safety analysis, reducing costs, and providing accurate results throughout the system life-cycle. In this paper we describe an extension to the ...

Abstract Background and Objectives Traumatic brain injury (TBI) affects millions worldwide and is without effective treatment. One area that is attracting growing interest is the use of transcranial low‐level laser therapy (LLLT) to treat TBI. The fact that near‐infrared light can penetrate into the brain would allow non‐invasive treatment to be carried out with a low likelihood of treatment‐related adverse events. LLLT may treat TBI by increasing respiration in the mitochondria, causing activation ...

Low level laser (or light) therapy (LLLT) has been clinically applied for many indications in medicine that require the following processes: protection from cell and tissue death, stimulation of healing and repair of injuries, and reduction of pain, swelling and inflammation. In both FGF-2–/– and FGF-2+/+ mice subjected to controlled cortical impact, the number of dividing cells labeled with BrdU, injected on posttrauma days 6 through 8, increased at 9 days after TBI, and the number of BrdU-positive cells colabeled with neuron-specific nuclear antigen significantly increased at 35 days. ...

Background: By the early 1980s, tuberculosis treatment was shortened from 24 to 6 months, maintaining relapse rates of 1-2%. Subsequent trials attempting shorter durations have failed, with 4-month arms consistently having relapse rates of 15-20%. One trial shortened treatment only among those without baseline cavity on chest x-ray and whose month 2 sputum culture converted to negative. The 4-month arm relapse rate decreased to 7% but was still significantly worse than the 6-month arm (1.6%, P<0. ...

Soil organisms, including earthworms, are a key component of terrestrial ecosystems. However, little is known about their diversity, their distribution, and the threats affecting them. We compiled a global dataset of sampled earthworm communities from 6928 sites in 57 countries as a basis for predicting patterns in earthworm diversity, abundance, and biomass. We found that local species richness and abundance typically peaked at higher latitudes, displaying patterns opposite to those observed in ...

Abstract Earthworms are an important soil taxon as ecosystem engineers, providing a variety of crucial ecosystem functions and services. Little is known about their diversity and distribution at large spatial scales, despite the availability of considerable amounts of local-scale data. Earthworm diversity data, obtained from the primary literature or provided directly by authors, were collated with information on site locations, including coordinates, habitat cover, and soil properties. Datasets ...

Response of erosive mechanisms to climate change is of mounting concern on Beaufort Sea coasts, which experience some of the highest erosion rates in the Arctic. Collapse of intact permafrost blocks and slumping within sprawling retrogressive thaw complexes are two predominant mechanisms that manifest as cliff retreat in this region. Using aerial imagery and ground survey data from Pullen Island, Northwest Territories., Canada, from 13 time points between 1947 and 2018, we observe increasing mean ...

Summary Earthworms have been perceived as benevolent soil engineers since the time of Charles Darwin, but several recent syntheses link earthworm activities to higher greenhouse gas emissions, less soil biodiversity, and inferior plant defense against pests. Our study provides new field-based evidence of the multiple direct and indirect impacts of earthworms on ecosystem functions within an ecological multifunctionality framework (i.e., aggregated measures of the ability of ecosystems to simultaneously ...

We investigate an extension of the quantum Ising model in one spatial dimension including long-range $1 / r^{\alpha}$ interactions in its statics and dynamics with possible applications from heteronuclear polar molecules in optical lattices to trapped ions described by two-state spin systems. We introduce the statics of the system via both numerical techniques with finite size and infinite size matrix product states and a theoretical approaches using a truncated Jordan-Wigner transformation for the ...

The formation and evolution of flow structures associated with a finite-span synthetic jet issued into a zero-pressure gradient boundary layer were investigated experimentally using stereoscopic particle image velocimetry. A synthetic jet with an aspect ratio of AR = 18 was mounted on a flat plate and its interaction with a free stream, having a velocity of U∞ = 10 m/s (Reδ = 2000) at momentum coefficients of Cμ = 0.08, 0.33, and 0.75, was studied. The effect of the orifice pitch (α = 20∘–90∘) and skew (β = 0∘– ...

Abstract Keloids are benign fibroproliferative tumors more frequently found among African Americans. Until now, keloid etiopathogenesis is not fully understood. To characterize keloids in African Americans, we performed transcriptional profiling of biopsies from large chronic keloids, adjacent non‐lesional (NL) skin (n=3) and a newly formed keloid lesion using Affymetrix HGU133 2.0 plus arrays. Quantitative RT‐PCR (qRT‐PCR) and immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining were performed to confirm increased ...

Objective A substantial body of literature has established the positive effect of breastfeeding on child developmental outcomes. There is increasing consensus that breastfed children have higher IQs after accounting for key variables, including maternal education, IQ, and socioeconomic status. Cross-sectional investigations of the effects of breastfeeding on structural brain development suggest that breastfed infants have larger whole brain, cortical, and white matter volumes. To date, few studies ...

A detailed analysis of a finite-span synthetic jet in a quiescent fluid is presented, with the goal of achieving a high speed and momentum synthetic jet, with a peak velocity exceeding 200 m/s. A total of two scales of actuator apparatuses having either 40- or 80-mm-diameter piezoelectric discs were used. A temperature-compensated hot wire, laser displacement sensor, and dynamic pressure transducers were used to quantify the performance of a given actuator. The synthetic jet generation process was ...
