Evidence suggests that aortic stiffness may antedate and contribute initially to the development of hypertension and cardiovascular risk (CVR). In treated hypertensive patients, both diabetes and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are comorbid conditions associated with increased aortic stiffness and high CVR. Thus, the pathophysiological relationship between aortic stiffness, blood pressure (BP) and CVR may have clinical implication in the management of hypertension. In patients with diabetes or ESRD, ...

The assessment of vulnerability in karst systems reveals to be extremely challenging since it varies significantly with time and highly depends on the identification of diffuse and concentrated infiltration from surface karst features. Background. Infections caused by acyclovir-resistant isolates of herpes simplex virus (HSV) after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) are an emerging concern. An understanding of the evolutionary aspects of HSV infection is crucial to the design of effective therapeutic and control strategies. Methods. Eight sequential HSV-1 isolates were recovered from an HSCT patient who suffered from recurrent herpetic gingivostomatitis and was treated alternatively with acyclovir, ganciclovir, and foscavir. ...

Accumulation of muscle TAG content and modification of muscle phospholipid fatty acid pattern may have an impact on lipid metabolism, increasing the risk of developing diabetes. Some polyphenols have been reported to modulate lipid metabolism, in particular those issued from red grapes. The present study was designed to determine whether a grape polyphenol extract (PPE) modulates skeletal muscle TAG content and phospholipid fatty acid composition in high-fat-high-sucrose (HFHS) diet-fed rats. High-fat or high-fat–high-sucrose diets are known to induce non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and this is emerging as one of the most common liver diseases worldwide. Some polyphenols have been reported to decrease rat hepatic lipid accumulation, in particular those extracted from red grapes such as resveratrol. The present study was designed to determine whether a polyphenol extract (PPE), from red grapes, modulates liver fatty acid composition and desaturase activity indexes in rats fed a high- ...

Prevention of infectious complications of chemotherapy-induced granulocytopenia is a major issue in preventive medicine, as febrile neutropenia is still associated with an overall 10% mortality and extensive morbidity and cost. The prescription of granulocyte colony-stimulating factors should not be determined according to a risk prediction of febrile neutropenia considering solely type of chemotherapy and according to cost-effectiveness; other factors appear now to be important for making the decision, ...

ABSTRACT The activity of fenticonazole was studied against 260 West and Southeast European vulvovaginal candidiasis isolates, and low MICs were displayed. Fenticonazole was assessed by European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing and CLSI microdilution methods for the first time, and the results showed excellent agreement (97%) and significant interclass correlation coefficient ( P < 0.0001). Also, the levels of agreement for the results for itraconazole, fluconazole, and ketoconazole were ...

We describe a rapid and reproducible PCR assay for quantitation of the Candida albicans ribosomal DNA (rDNA) in clinical blood samples based on the TaqMan principle (Applied Biosystems), in which a signal is generated by cleavage of a template-specific probe during amplification. We used two fluorogenic probes based on universal, fungus-specific primers, one for the detection of C. albicans species DNA and one for the detection of all Candida genus DNA. C. albicans blastoconidia mixed with whole blood ...

Splenic abscess is a very rare complication of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). Clinical presentation includes fever, leucocystosis, and abdominal pain. CT SCAN is a must for diagnosis. The preferred treatment is either conservative, with intravenous antibiotics and percutaneous drainage, or splenectomy. We report the thirteen case of a splenic abscess after LSG. In our patient, the abscess occurred three weeks after LSG in a 21-year-old man, and it was successfully treated conservatively.

Primary mature retroperitoneal teratomas are rare tumors most commonly occurring in adult females. These tumors are usually asymptomatic since they have no attachments to specific organs. We present a rare case of a 28-year-old male with 2-month history of lower urinary tract symptoms, who was found to have a primary mature cystic teratoma abutting the prostate.
