On August 8, 1994, the last steel plate was welded to close the main span of the Normandie Bridge, which, at 856 m, is the longest cable-stayed span in the world today. The success of the Normandie Bridge is due in large part to the confidence and support that the project received from the Owner, the Road Director and the local authorities. Nevertheless, some engineers from one of the erection contractors considered the wind forces to have been underestimated and, thus, the safety questionable. ...

AbstractThis paper deals with the analysis of the temperature records obtained for the Normandy Bridge [1], in particular for the orthotropic steel box girder. After a short description of the measuring equipment and of the goals of the analysis, daily cycles are briefly described. Then the distribution of extreme temperatures is analysed in more detail, showing how the temperatures in the structure can be evaluated from meteorological data, temperature and solar radiation.

This paper is devoted to a new field of application of cable-stayed bridges: bridges with multiple cable-stayed spans. It begins with a short historical review and a special reference to Ricardo Morandi's bridges. It then describes the very few bridges that have been built recently with multiple cable-stayed spans and the designs that have been proposed in the last thirty years. It ends with the presentation of three recent major projects, at least one of which will be built. These three projects ...

The Millau viaduct's monitoring and instrumentation system was designed by a team of experts already involved in structural engineering of the bridge. With the client they set objectives and priorities. Data management, system monitoring and maintenance were also examined. After describing the monitiring program, the results are presented for the first few operating years of the structure.

This paper aims to provide evidence of the rapid progress in cable-stayed bridges. The span record progressed rapidly during the last 10 years, passing from 465 to almost 900 m; it is now expected that 1200 m will be reached soon, if care is taken with regard to aerodynamic stability and dynamic response to turbulent wind, which can be now mastered. Cable vibrations, which have been extensively analysed in the last few years, can also be controlled by different types of countermeasures. However, ...

This paper aims to give an overview of the recent evolution in the design and construction of prestressed concrete bridges worldwide. Several major trends are evidenced. Certainly those which have the larger influence for the industry due to their wide applications are the development of external prestressing, now systematically used in some countries for medium span bridges; the emergence of high performance concrete which extends the possibilities at the same time as improving the durability of ...

Bridge design is the essence of engineering, the essence of what David Billington calls "structural art". The elegance and beauty of a bridge come from its structural efficiency expressed in shapes that are in agreement with its particular site. Art and architecture must become part of the engineer's professional culture, more than calculating crack openings and code writing. Designing is not computing; designing is selecting adapted shapes for an efficient and agreeable flow of forces with elegance ...

Ausgearbeitet ...

The assessment of the aerodynamic performances of the Third Bosporus Bridge (BB3) has been realized through tests in two different Wind Tunnels, CSTB and Politecnico di Milano (POLIMI) and with different scale factors. The design process of a super long span bridge is strongly influenced by the wind actions on the bridge itself and the definitions of wind loads and wind induced dynamics cannot be done without relevant experimental campaigns. The definition of the local wind characteristics is the ...

For the Antrenas interchange, the architects originally proposed a concrete arch bridge, with no intermediate supports at this relatively open and visible location. When the project was presented to SETRA, the French National Highway and Road Department, an alternative arch solution was proposed by the consulting engineer. The alternative was based on a previous, unrealized design for an arch made of concrete-filled steel pipes with a prestressed concrete deck slab; the slab being connected to the ...

The Tancarville bridge across the Seine was the subject of numerous design efforts during the first part of the 20th century. In 1953 the final design of a suspension structure was selected by the French authorities. Construction began in 1954 and was completed in 1959. This marked the opening of the longest suspended span in Europe for that time. Indications of rapid corrosion in the suspension cables were observed as early as 1965, and by 1970 design work was under way for possible cable replacement. ...

The rck open reading frame (ORF) on the pefI-srgC operon encodes an outer membrane protein responsible for invasion of nonphagocytic cell lines and resistance to complement-mediated killing. Until now, the rck ORF was only detected on the virulence plasmids of three serovars of Salmonella subsp. enterica (i.e., Bovismorbificans, Enteritidis, and Typhimurium). The increasing number of Salmonella genome sequences allowed us to use a combination of reference sequences and whole-genome multilocus sequence ...
