Abstract This special issue reflects on innovation and industrial policy from the premise that economic growth can be based on the permanent transformation of an economic system via the emergence and/or transformation of multi-agent structures and their inherent competences and knowledge base. The process of emergence or transformation is conceived as being the result of entrepreneurial effort, or entrepreneurs reacting to external stimuli in a way that takes advantage of an evolving knowledge base. ...

This study sought to investigate the efficacy and performance of the XIENCE V everolimus-eluting stent (EES) (Abbott Vascular, Santa Clara, California) in the treatment of de novo coronary lesions in patients with 2- to 3-vessel multivessel coronary artery disease (MV-CAD). Drug-eluting stents (DES) have emerged as an alternative to conventional coronary artery bypass surgery in patients with MV-CAD although first-generation DES yielded inferior efficacy and safety compared with surgery. Prospective, ...

Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) is released from the Earth’s interior into the atmosphere through both volcanic and non-volcanic sources in a variety of tectonic settings. A quantitative understanding of CO 2 outgassing fluxes in different geological settings is thus critical for decoding the link between the global carbon budget and different natural processes (e.g., volcanic eruption and earthquake nucleation) and the effects on the climate evolution over geological time. It has recently been proposed that ...

Bleeding has emerged as a predictor of early and late mortality after percutaneous coronary interventions. However, the prevalence and predictors of long-term bleeding events in patients on prolonged dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) after drug-eluting stent (DES) implantation has been poorly explored.A total of 1,437 patients undergoing DES implantation discharged on DAPT with aspirin and clopidogrel for 1 year were studied. Patients were followed for up to 4 years (34.3 ± 14.4 months) and the prevalence ...

The encouragement of innovation at the regional level has been the subject of a series of EU initiatives, but there is, as yet, no overarching framework that provides clear, effective and widely accepted guidance for policy-makers. We identify some of the limitations facing innovation policy in Europe and put forward some ideas based on interdisciplinary thinking and methods which may help overcome these limitations. We propose two approaches to address the challenge of innovation policy formulation: ...

Recent debate on industrial policy has shifted toward innovation-related issues and economic geography. The conceptual strength and practical implementation of some of these approaches is of concern, particularly the strategic approach termed 'smart specialisation' and its focus on prioritising economic activities with greater potential for growth by relying on processes of 'entrepreneurial discovery'. The cases of Lower Austria, Lithuania and Saskatchewan reveal a wide variety of developmental pathways ...

Objective A pharmacodynamic interaction between clopidogrel and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) has been suggested, leading to reduced clopidogrel-induced platelet inhibitory effects. However, data from clinical studies are conflicting. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety of long-term clopidogrel and PPI therapy. Methods A total of 1328 consecutive patients (age 63±11 years; 81% male) undergoing drug-eluting stent implantation and 1-year follow-up were included. All patients were treated ...

Abstract The Scottish referendum of 2014 encouraged massive public debate, including on Scotland’s scientific performance and ability to harness innovation and increase global competitiveness. The science base in Scotland has traditionally been strong but has not translated well into innovation. This article uses statistical data, over 30 interviews and two workshops with business and policy leaders, to analyse key scientific and industrial innovation dynamics, using a regional innovation systems ( ...

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common form of kidney cancer with 403,262 diagnoses and 170,000 deaths worldwide in 2018. Although partial or radical nephrectomy can be considered a successful treatment in early-stage or localized RCC, in advanced-stage disease, there is a high risk of metastasis or recurrence with a significantly poorer prognosis. Metastatic RCC is generally resistant to both chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and, despite several novel therapeutic agents, disease progression ...

Abstract COVID-19 negatively affected surgical activity, but the potential benefits resulting from adopted measures remain unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the change in surgical activity and potential benefit from COVID-19 measures in perspective of Italian surgeons on behalf of SPIGC. A nationwide online survey on surgical practice before, during, and after COVID-19 pandemic was conducted in March–April 2022 (NCT:05323851). Effects of COVID-19 hospital-related measures on surgical ...

The focus of this paper is on Lithuania, whose government released an ambitious innovation strategy to become an innovative services hub for Northern Europe by 2015, and an innovation hub by 2020. Biotechnology has been identified as a strategic sector, and whether Lithuania will be able to achieve its ambition of a fully functioning biotechnology sectoral system of innovation will be explored. With the Lithuanian government declaring that they will intervene to achieve their innovation goals, this ...

BACKGROUND: The treatment of patients with primary CNS lymphomas (PCNSL) has dramatically changed since the 1970's when whole brain radiation generated median survivals of about 12 months, significant neurotoxcity, and few long term survivors.High dose methotrexate (HD-MTX) monotherapy without radiation provides excellent response rates and 30% long term survivors without neurotoxicity. In general, relapses occur in the first two to four years after diagnosis and reports of very late relapses are rare. ...
