Most patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) and pancreatic insufficiency require supplementation with fat-soluble vitamins to maintain normal serum levels. Even with supplementation, toxicity is rare. We evaluated serum vitamin A and E levels in 23 adult patients with CF who underwent double lung transplantation. Twenty-one of the subjects were pancreatic insufficient. Fifteen subjects had serum vitamin levels before and after transplant. The median time posttransplantation for these subjects was 9 months. ...

A variety of cyclic and acyclic [(pentadienyl)Fe(CO)2L]X complexes (L = CO, PPh3) containing terminal acyloxy or alkoxy substituents have been prepared. In situ NMR studies indicate that for the acyclic series where L = CO, stability is limited by solvolysis reactions. The position of nucleophilic attack (ipso for alkoxy, internal for acyloxy) in the acyclic series indicates an electron-donating and electron-withdrawing nature for alkoxy and acyloxy substituents, respectively. In the cyclic series, the ...

This paper analyses contemporary Australian newspaper coverage of the threat of pandemic influenza in humans, specifically in the light of recent transformations in biomedical and public health understandings of infectious disease as continuously emerging. Our analysis suggests that the spectre of pandemic influenza is characterised, in newspaper accounts, as invoking a specific form of nation building. The Australian nation is depicted as successfully securing itself in the face of a threat from ...

Bile acid receptors regulate the metabolic and immune functions of circulating enterohepatic bile acids. This process is disrupted by administration of parenteral nutrition (PN), which may induce progressive hepatic injury for unclear reasons, especially in the newborn, leading to PN-associated liver disease. To explore the role of bile acid signaling on neonatal hepatic function, we initially observed that Takeda G protein receptor 5 (TGR5)-specific bile acids were negatively correlated with worsening ...

The literature on intimate partner violence in resource-poor contexts relies primarily on cross-sectional studies. Because changes in women's status and empowerment are hypothesized to influence violence vulnerability, longitudinal studies are needed to determine the potential benefits and harms associated with such changes.Data were collected prospectively from a representative cohort of 4,749 married women in rural areas of four socially and demographically diverse states in India in 1998-1999 ...

Contextual action theory was used to frame an exploratory qualitative study of young adult couples' experiences of transitioning from post-secondary education into the labor force, addressing the specific research question "What kinds of projects for future work and life together do young adult couples jointly construct and pursue as they transition from post-secondary education into the labor force?" The sample consisted of 18 pairs of young adults (age M = 25.7, SD = 2.7) from Western Canada, who self- ...

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) has transformed genomic research by reducing turnaround time and cost. However, no major breakthrough has been made in the upstream library preparation methods until the transposase-based Nextera method was invented. Nextera combines DNA fragmentation and barcoding in a single tube reaction and therefore enables a very fast workflow to sequencing-ready DNA libraries within a couple of hours. When compared to the traditional ligation-based methods, transposed-based ...

Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exhibit poor sleep quality and consider morning as the worst time of day for their symptoms. While work has been done to characterize nighttime (NT) and early morning (EM) symptoms in various populations, the impact and factors associated with NT/EM symptoms among patients with COPD in the United States is not well understood. Commercially insured patients aged ≥40 years with one or more medical claim for COPD and one or more pharmacy claim ...

This study examines the relationship between male to female physical domestic violence and contraceptive adoption among women in four economically and culturally distinct areas of India. Data from India’s 1998-1999 National Family Health Survey–2 and a follow-up survey in 2002-2003 for which the same women in four states were reinterviewed are analyzed. The focus of the analysis is on how baseline exposure to physical domestic violence is associated with the intersurvey adoption of contraception. ...
