Emx1 and Emx2, mouse orthologs of the Drosophila head gap gene, ems, are expressed during corticogenesis. Emx2 null mutants exhibit mild defects in cortical lamination. Segregation of differentiating neurons from proliferative cells is normal for the most part, however, reelin-positive Cajal-Retzius cells are lost by the late embryonic period. Additionally, late-born cortical plate neurons display abnormal position. These types of lamination defects are subtle in the Emx1 mutant cortex. In the present ...

Delphilin is identified as a Glutamate receptor δ2 (GluRδ2) subunit interacting protein, consisting of a PDZ domain and formin homology (FH) domains 1 and 2, in addition to a C-terminal coiled-coil structure. Delphilin has been shown to be selectively expressed in cerebellar Purkinje cells where it co-localizes with the GluRδ2 subunit at the Purkinje cell-parallel fiber synapses. Although Delphilin specifically interacts with the GluRδ2 C-terminus via its PDZ domain, the physiological role of the ...

Growth factors regulate cell fates, including their proliferation, differentiation, survival, and death, according to the cell type. Even when the response to a specific growth factor is deterministic for collective cell behavior, significant levels of fluctuation are often observed between single cells. Statistical analyses of single-cell responses provide insights into the mechanism of cell fate decisions but very little is known about the distributions of the internal states of cells responding ...

Intercellular signals induce various cellular responses, including growth, proliferation, and differentiation, via the dynamic processes of signal transduction pathways. For cell fate decisions, ligand-binding induces the phosphorylation of ERBB receptors, which in turn activate downstream molecules. The ERBB family includes four subtypes, which diverged through two gene duplications from a common ancestor. Differences in the expression patterns of the subtypes have been reported between different ...

Retrospective database analysis.Spine surgeries in elderly patients have increased in recent years due to aging of society and recent advances in surgical techniques, and postoperative complications have become more of a concern. Postoperative delirium is a common complication in elderly patients that impairs recovery and increases morbidity and mortality. The objective of the study was to analyze postoperative delirium associated with spine surgery in patients aged 80 years or older with cervical, ...

Background & Aims This study investigated the efficacy and adverse effects of pegylated interferon (Peg-IFN) plus ribavirin therapy in aged patients with chronic hepatitis C (CH-C). Methods A total of 1040 naïve patients with CH-C (genotype 1, n = 759; genotype 2, n = 281), of whom 240 (23%) over 65 years old (y.o.), were treated with Peg-IFN alfa-2b plus ribavirin and assessed after being classified into five categories, according to age. Results The discontinuance rate was higher for patients over 70 y.o. ( ...

The two-dimensional wake of a thin flat plate parallel to the stream was maintained laminar and steady at Reynolds numbers up to 3000 in a low-turbulence wind tunnel. Velocity distributions in the wake were measured in detail for Reynolds numbers from 20 to 3000. One of the interesting results is the appearance of a velocity overshoot, namely that the velocity in the outer part of the shear layer exceeds that of the uniform flow in the vicinity of the trailing edge. Comparisons between the experimental ...

Summary. Reducing the dose of drug affects treatment efficacy in pegylated interferon (Peg-IFN) and ribavirin combination therapy for patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of drug exposure, as well as the baseline factors and the virological response on the treatment efficacy for genotype 2 patients. Two-hundred and fifty patients with genotype 2 HCV who were to undergo combination therapy for 24 weeks were included in the study, and ...

Background & Aims In patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, lack of sustained virologic response (SVR) 24 weeks after the end of interferon therapy is a significant risk factor for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Although many pretreatment factors are known to affect HCC incidence, less is known about post-treatment factors—many change during the course of interferon therapy. Methods We performed a prospective study, collecting data from 2659 patients with chronic hepatitis C without a history ...

To account for our previous experimental results, the flow past a flat plate set parallel to a uniform stream is investigated on the basis of Oseen's equations of motion. We are mainly concerned with the wake region and calculate the velocity field in detail for the range of Reynolds numbers 20–3000, corresponding to the experiments. The calculation shows that there is a velocity overshoot in the velocity distribution near the trailing edge, with the same magnitude as in the experiments. Furthermore, ...

Erythromycin (EM) and rifampicin (RFP) have mainly been used to treat patients with Legionella pneumonia. Since intravenous ciprofloxacin (CPFX) became available in Japan from 2000, many reports have been published detailing successful treatment of Legionella pneumonia with CPFX. In this study, we compared the evolution of patients with Legionella pneumonia treated with CPFX to those treated with EM.The study included nine patients treated with CPFX and eighteen patients treated with EM. Abstract A novel organic donor radical, TSBN, which is a benzotetraselenafulvalene derivative carrying a nitronyl nitroxide group in a cross-conjugated manner was prepared. X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed that TSBN forms a sheet-like network within the ac plane through intermolecular chalcogen contacts. Its spin-polarized structure was confirmed by cyclic voltammogram, ESR spectra of singly oxidized species and DFT calculation. The neutral crystal of TSBN showed nonlinear I–V characteristics ...

Soluble forms of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I‐related chain A and B (MICA/B) are increased in the sera of patients with malignancy and impair the antitumor immune response by downregulating expression of their cognate immunoreceptor natural killer group 2, member D (NKG2D). Recently, soluble MICA/B were reported to appear even in some premalignant diseases, raising questions about the impact of soluble MICA/B produced from tumors on the expression of NKG2D. The present study examined ...

Infective endocarditis, a serious infection most commonly affecting rheumatic or prosthetic valves, generally occurs after bacteremia. Atopic dermatitis, a very common disease, carries a high prevalence of skin infections, particularly with Staphylococcus aureus. While cutaneous colonization by S. aureus represents an important source of bacteremia, few cases of infective endocarditis arising from the skin lesions of atopic dermatitis have been reported. We describe a patient with recurrent S. aureus ...

Background. Nocturnal polyuria has been well known in renal insufficiency. Recently, we found that as renal function deteriorated in chronic kidney disease (CKD), natriuresis was enhanced during the night with nocturnal blood pressure elevation. In the present study, we investigated whether nocturnal polyuria in CKD was due to the inability to concentrate urine, as previously proposed, or based on osmotic diuresis mainly by natriuresis. Methods. In 27 CKD patients, circadian rhythms of urinary sodium, ...

False negative rates were compared in two screening modalities, physical examination with or without mammography, in an intervention study for women aged over 50 in Miyagi Prefecture. Thirty‐five breast cancers were detected in 12,515 subjects who participated in the trial consisting of physical examination and mammography, whereas 44 breast cancers were detected in 50,105 subjects who received physical examination alone, so that the detection rates were 0.28% and 0.09%, respectively. The comparison experiment results of the standard seawater (SSW) were presented for batches P90, P100, P104, P106, P108 P111, and P112. This work shows that the SSW batch-to-batch agreement was recently improved. The adjusted mean differences relative to the mean of SSW batches P91 to P102 (Mantyla 1987) ranged from −0.6×10−3 to 0.8×10−3 for the SSW batches of P100, P104, P106, P108, P111, and P112.
