Norma G. Chapman, Mick Furlong, Stephen Harris,

Unlike most species of deer, Reeves' muntjac does not have a seasonal reproductive cycle. Births are equally distributed throughout the year and, irrespective of season of birth, females start breeding when they have reached a minimum body weight of about 10 kg. A significantly smaller proportion of females is born in the autumn/winter than the spring/summer, but there is no effect of maternal age or condition on foetal sex ratios for first or subsequent pregnancies. Whilst aseasonal breeding increases ...

Dan Harris, Mick Moore, Hubert Schmitz,

Summary The distinction between developing and developed countries has long been central to development studies and to debates on development policy. In earlier decades, it was in many respects accurate, and was for many purposes useful. Although the world is still very much divided between rich and poor countries, relationships among countries have changed so much that the developing–developed country distinction has become an obstacle to understanding current problems and opportunities and, even ...

Carbon uptake by marine phytoplankton, and its export as organic matter to the ocean interior (i.e., the "biological pump"), lowers the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO(2)) in the upper ocean and facilitates the diffusive drawdown of atmospheric CO(2). Conversely, precipitation of calcium carbonate by marine planktonic calcifiers such as coccolithophorids increases pCO(2) and promotes its outgassing (i.e., the "alkalinity pump"). Over the past approximately 100 million years, these two carbon ...

Recent legislative changes to red fox Vulpes vulpes control practices in Britain have focussed attention on the possible impact of fox predation on economically and ecologically important species in agricultural landscapes. We compared the estimated mass of prey consumed annually against the pre-breeding biomass of prey species on a farm in southern England. Medium-sized mammals (mainly rabbits Oryctolagus cuniculus) dominated fox diet in all seasons (74% of mass ingested); birds (mainly pheasants ...

Mick Bailey, K. Haverson, Charlotte Inman, Craig Harris, Philip H. Jones, Gaynor Corfield, B.G. Miller, Chris R. Stokes,

The mucosal immune system fulfils the primary function of defence against potential pathogens that may enter across vulnerable surface epithelia. However, a secondary function of the intestinal immune system is to discriminate between pathogen-associated and ‘harmless’ antigens, expressing active responses against the former and tolerance to the latter. Control of immune responses appears to be an active process, involving local generation of IgA and of regulatory and/or regulated T lymphocytes. ...

Mick Bailey, K. Haverson, Charlotte Inman, Craig Harris, Philip H. Jones, Gaynor Corfield, B.G. Miller, Christopher Stokes,

The mucosal immune system expresses active responses against pathogens and also tolerance against harmless food and commensal bacterial antigens. The mechanisms that determine which of these outcomes occur after recognition of antigens by T-cells are not clear. One possibility is that it is determined by the initial interaction between a dendritic and a naïve T-cell in organised lymphoid tissue. However, such organised structures are, evolutionarily, quite recent and the original immune system must ...

William A. Harris, Mick McKeown,

The developmental relationship between the nervous system and the epidermis is intimate. In nematodes1, annelids2, arthropods3, and vertebrates4, neural and epidermal elements arise from common lineages. In many cases, cells can be induced to switch from one fate to the other by genetic or environmental changes2,4–8. The close relationship between these two ectodermal derivatives in a variety of animals suggests that they share common genetic instructions, at least up to a certain critical phase ...

Six patients with insufficient soft-tissue coverage after lower limb trauma were treated with pedicled fillet of foot flaps to achieve primary stump closure and to preserve leg length. The flaps used were all based on either the posterior tibial neurovascular pedicle, the anterior tibial neurovascular pedicle, or both. Five flaps survived; one patient required conversion of a through-knee to an above-knee amputation and debridement of the flap because of venous thrombosis of the pedicle. In three ...

When interleukin-2 (IL-2) binds to the IL-2 receptor (IL2-R) on activated T cells, a soluble portion of the receptor (sIL2-R) is released. After allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT), the serum concentration of sIL2-R may, therefore, be a useful surrogate marker for T cell activation that results in acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD). To determine if the sIL2-R concentration is a useful marker to help establish a diagnosis of aGVHD, serial sIL2-R concentrations were measured weekly for 4 ...
