The discharge of nutrients, phytoplankton and pathogenic bacteria through ballast water may threaten the Cayo Arcas reef system. To assess this threat, the quality of ballast water and presence of coral reef pathogenic bacteria in 30 oil tankers loaded at the PEMEX Cayo Arcas crude oil terminal were determined. The water transported in the ships originated from coastal, oceanic or riverine regions. Statistical associations among quality parameters and bacteria were tested using redundancy analysis ( ...

Abstract Ten non‐lactating multiparous Pelibuey breed ewes were housed in a corral to evaluate the effects of summer thermal stress on physiologic variables, estrous behavior, ovulation and corpus luteum functionality under natural conditions of an arid region. In summer and autumn, daily estrous detection with a ram fitted with an apron and blood sample collections were performed during two natural estrous cycles. An environment of heat stress was detected in summer and thermoneutral in autumn. ...

Electrical resistivity tomography (ERI) and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys have been combined to investigate different volcanic materials, their contacts (lava flows, pyroclastic deposits, dykes) and structures (lava tubes, faults) in Tenerife (Canary Islands). The EM waves mean velocities estimated for the different rocks range from 0.075 to 0.1 m ns− 1. Non-consolidated materials such as hydromagmatic, pyroclastic and airfall deposits display the lowest EM mean velocities, whereas massive and ...

Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) distribution in natural areas and crop field edges in La Rioja (Northern Spain) has been studied taking into account environmental and physical–chemical soil factors. Five hundred soil samples from 100 sites of the most representative habitats were assayed for the presence of EPNs. The occurrence of EPNs statistically fitted to a negative binomial distribution, which pointed out that the natural distribution of these nematodes in La Rioja was in aggregates. There ...

Intramyocardial dissecting hematoma is a form of subacute cardiac rupture complicating acute myocardial infarction. Initially contained within the myocardial wall, the hematoma may expand, rupture into adjacent structures, or spontaneously resolve. However, long-term follow-up is unknown because clinical and serial imaging data are lacking. The purpose of this study was to characterize the early and late myocardial wall changes after transmural myocardial infarction using serial ultrasound examinations ...

Ventricular septal rupture (VSR), which can complicate an acute myocardial infarction (MI), carries a high mortality rate. Because precordial and transesophageal echocardiography can identify the type of rupture and assess right ventricular (RV) function at the patient's bedside, we examined the prognostic significance of echocardiographic patterns in postinfarct VSR by postulating that complex rupture and RV involvement carry a worse prognosis. Seventeen patients (10 men; mean age 66 years) who had ...

A non-ionic hydrophobic natural deep eutectic solvent (HNADES) based on thymol and menthol was proposed for the liquid-liquid microextraction of fourteen phthalates and one adipate from environmental water samples. Separation, identification, and quantification were achieved by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry. The main factors affecting the extraction efficiency were thoroughly studied. Sample pH of 8 and 100 μL of thymol:menthol at molar ratio 2:1 ...

INTRODUCTION: Interleukin 17A (IL-17A) is a pro-inflammatory cytokine produced by helper T cells (Th17) and other cells of the immune system and exerts pleiotropic effects on multiple cell lines. The role of IL-17 in the pathogenesis of numerous inflammatory disorders is well-documented. IL-17 activates signaling through the IL-17 receptor, which induces other proinflammatory cytokines, antimicrobial peptides, and neutrophil chemokines that are important for antifungal activity.EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: ...

Abstract Nowadays, mathematical models of hydrological systems are used routinely to guide decision making in diverse subjects, such as: environmental and risk assessments, design of remediation strategies for contaminated sites, and evaluation of the impact of climate change on water resources. The correct development and use of them is relevant beyond the realm of hydrology. The continuous improvement in computational power and data collection are leading to the development of increasingly complex ...

Edible films were prepared with whey protein incorporating candelilla wax, and glycerol in aqueous solution. Tarbush polyphenols were added as bioactive agent. An optimization based on the water vapor permeability (WVP) of the formulation was performed using a Box-Behnken design. The films were characterized by the determination of WVP, moisture, solubility, color, antioxidant and antifungal activity. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was also performed to observe the surface and cross-section micrographs. ...

The bioactive sphingolipid ceramide 1-phosphate (C1P) regulates key physiologic cell functions and is implicated in a number of metabolic alterations and pathological processes. Initial studies using different types of fibroblasts and monocytes/macrophages revealed that C1P was mitogenic and that it promoted cell survival through inhibition of apoptosis. Subsequent studies implicated C1P in inflammatory responses with a specific role as pro-inflammatory agent. Specifically, C1P potently stimulated ...

Plants adapt to soil injury and biotic stress via cell regeneration. In Arabidopsis, root tip damage by genotoxic agents, antibiotics, UV light and cutting induces a program that recovers the missing tissues through activation of stem cells and involves ethylene response factor 115 (ERF115), which triggers cell replenishment. Here, we show that mutation of the gene encoding an MED18 subunit of the transcriptional MEDIATOR complex and chromate [Cr(VI)], an environmental pollutant, synergistically trigger ...

The ability of Candida spp. to form biofilms is crucial for its pathogenicity, and thus, it should be considered an important virulence factor in vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) and recurrent VVC (RVVC). Its ability to generate biofilms is multifactorial and is generally believed to depend on the site of infection, species and strain involved, and the microenvironment in which the infection develops. Therefore, both cell surface proteins, such as Hwp1, Als1, and Als2, and the cell wall-related protein, ...

Abstract Aims Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy/dysplasia (ARVC/D) is a life-threatening entity with a highly heterogeneous genetic background. Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging can identify fibrofatty scar by late gadolinium enhancement (LGE). Our aim is to investigate genotype–phenotype correlation in ARVC/D mutation carriers, focusing on CMR-LGE and myocardial fibrosis patterns. Methods and results A cohort of 44 genotyped patients, 33 with definite and 11 with borderline ARVC/ ...

Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most prevalent cancer in men worldwide. Despite the advances understanding the molecular processes driving the onset and progression of this disease, as well as the continued implementation of screening programs, PCa still remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality, in particular in low-income countries. It is only recently that defects of the translation process, i.e. the synthesis of proteins by the ribosome using a messenger (m)RNA as a template, ...

Piquin pepper (Capsicum annuum var. glabriusculum) is an important species that supports the economy of rural households; it is part of Mexican gastronomy and it is a highly valuable phytogenetic resource. There has been recent interest in domesticating and exploiting piquin pepper commercially, which has been limited until now due to the low germination rate, and this work had the purpose of promoting germination and determining the physiological capacity of genotypes. Ten piquin pepper genotypes ...
