Background: Epidemiological data on impaired fasting glucose (IFG) and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) based on a representative Mexican sample are not available; thus, the objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence and distribution of IFG and IGT, and to establish its relationship with obesity in Mexican adults. Methods: We performed a cross-sectional population-based study on a representative sample of Mexican adults aged 30 to 65 years. Anthropometric measurements of obesity that ...

The production of furfural from renewable sources, such as lignocellulosic biomass, has gained great interest within the concept of biorefineries. In lignocellulosic materials, xylose is the most abundant pentose, which forms the hemicellulosic part. One of the key steps in the production of furfural from biomass is the dehydration reaction of the pentoses. The objective of this work was to assess the conditions under which the concentration of furfural is maximized from a synthetic, monophasic, ...

The aim of this work was to monitor the quality, antioxidant capacity and digestibility of chickpea exposed to different modified atmospheres. Chickpea quality (proximal analysis, color, texture, and water absorption) and the antioxidant capacity of free, conjugated, and bound phenol fractions obtained from raw and cooked chickpea, were determined. Cooked chickpea was exposed to N2 and CO2 atmospheres for 0, 25, and 50 days, and the antioxidant capacity was analyzed by DPPH (2,2′-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl), ...

Olive stone (OS) is a lignocellulosic material obtained as a coproduct in the olive oil production industry, mainly composed of hemicelluloses, with xylose accounting for 24.4 % by weight as the main sugar. In this study, an optimized process for obtaining furfural from OS was assessed. The process consists of two steps; the first one, aimed at maximizing the solubilization of xylose, was performed in an autoclave at 130 °C and 2.6 %w/v H2SO4, resulting in 83 % xylose recovery in the liquid fraction. The ...

Abstract Background Less invasive alternatives than early cholecystectomy (EC) for acute calculous cholecystitis (ACC) treatment have been spreading in recent years. We still lack a reliable tool to select high-risk patients who could benefit from these alternatives. Our study aimed to prospectively validate the Chole-risk score in predicting postoperative complications in patients undergoing EC for ACC compared with other preoperative risk prediction models. Method The S.P.Ri.M.A.C.C. study is a ...

Through ontogeny, human cranial vault bones undergo differentiation in terms of their shape, size and tissue maturation. This differentiation is visible at both the macroscopic and microscopic levels. Preliminary data from a histological and compartmentalisation exploratory analysis of individuals with different ages suggest differences in the modelling and remodelling patterns through ontogeny. Child vault bones are primarily composed of avascular lamellar bone (largely vascularised), late juvenile ...

Upper endoscopy showed active oozing from a 2-cm ulcerated mass on the gastric incisura angularis ([Fig. 1]) and a 1-cm polypoid lesion in the second portion of the duodenum just proximal to the major papilla ([Fig. 2]). Biopsies ...

Climate change and population growth have heavily impacted the ecosystem’s water resources, essential for anthropogenic activities. These also apply to the Andean city of Chachapoyas, located in the north of Peru, which has gone through a substantial population increase in recent years, therefore increasing its water demand. This research aimed to assess dry and wet events from 1981 to 2019 that have taken place in Chachapoyas, by applying the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), and the Standardized ...

Pulmonary complications are the most common cause of death after surgery. This study aimed to derive and externally validate a novel prognostic model that can be used before elective surgery to estimate the risk of postoperative pulmonary complications and to support resource allocation and prioritisation during pandemic recovery. Data from an international, prospective cohort study were used to develop a novel prognostic risk model for pulmonary complications after elective surgery in adult patients ( ...

Throughout ontogeny, human bones undergo differentiation in terms of shape, size and tissue type; this is a complex scenario in which the variations in the tissue compartmentalisation of the cortical bone are still poorly understood. Currently, compartmentalisation is studied using methodologies that oversimplify the bone tissue complexity. Here, we present a new methodological approach that integrates a histological description and a mineral content analysis to study the compartmentalisation of ...

Abstract For many years, clinical and non‐clinical investigations have investigated cortical bone structure in an attempt to address questions related to normal bone development, mineralisation, pathologies and even evolutionary trends in our lineage (adaptations). Research in the fields of medicine, materials science, physical anthropology, palaeontology, and even archaeobiology has contributed interesting data. However, many questions remain regarding the histomorphological and histochemical variations ...

Klebsiella pneumoniae successfully colonizes host tissues by recognizing and interacting with cholesterol present on membrane-associated lipid rafts. In this study, we evaluated the role of cholesterol in the expression of capsule polysaccharide genes of K. pneumoniae and its implication in resistance to phagocytosis. Our data revealed that exogenous cholesterol added to K. pneumoniae increases macrophage-mediated phagocytosis. To explain this event, the expression of capsular galF, wzi and manC ...

Olive stones (OS) constitute the main solid by-product of the olive oil industry, whose main application is direct burning. As an alternative, this work proposes an integrated multiproduct OS biorefinery, to produce furfural, lignin, antioxidants and sugars. A combination of pre-treatments, i.e. dilute acid pre-treatment followed by alkaline peroxide delignification, was assessed in order to improve on the previously limited results reported for the same raw materials. The operational conditions ...

Since temperature affects the inactivation rate of viruses in natural water systems, the aim of this study was to determine if a temperature shift could influence the structural integrity of model viruses. When crude lysates of MS-2 phage were seeded into groundwater microcosms and incubated at 27°C, complete virus inactivation took place in eight days. The temperature was then shifted to 4°C. Three days after the temperature shift, a two-log increase in virus titer (reactivation) occurred. However, ...

Polylactic acid (PLA) and montmorillonite (CB) as filler were studied as coatings for cellulose based packages. Amorphous (AM) and semi crystalline (SC) PLA were used at different concentrations according to a 2 × 6 × 3 full factorial experimental design. Paper recycling has increased in recent years. A principal consequence of this process is the problem of addressing some polymeric components known as stickies. A deep characterization of stickies sampled over one year in a recycled paper industry in México was performed. Based on their chemical structure, an enzymatic assay was performed using lipases. Compounds found in stickies by Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry were poly (butyl-acrylate), dioctyl phthalate, poly (vinyl-acetate), and poly ( ...

Las distintas definiciones acerca del ser humano intentan identificar una característica que generalizar para todo el género Homo. Esta cuestión nace del principio de identidad, y tiene fuertes repercusiones en las concepciones antropológicas sobre las que se asienta la pedagogía.
