Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) is a reliable therapy for the treatment of urolithiasis. Nevertheless, improvements to enhance stone fragmentation and reduce tissue damage are still needed. During SWL, cavitation is one of the most important stone fragmentation mechanisms. Bubbles with a diameter between about 7 and 55 μm have been reported to expand and collapse after shock wave passage, forming liquid microjets at velocities of up to 400 m/s that contribute to the pulverization of renal ...

Poly(methyl methacrylate) composites reinforced with natural protein biofibers from chicken feathers were prepared and evaluated through a series of tensile tests. Afterward, the samples were analyzed by optical and scanning electron microscopy studies, to obtain a clear picture of the tensile-induced damages. The hydrophobic nature of keratin fiber produces an excellent compatibility between fibers and PMMA matrix. This fact is reflected in the good dispersion of protein fibers achieved without ...

Natural fibres have recently attracted scientists' attention because of their advantages from the environmental standpoint. However, almost all the research has been directed towards cellulose from vegetal sources without taking into account other potentially interesting compounds like keratin, which can be found in feathers, wool, nail or hair. In spite of its strength, low density and biodegradability, keratin has been studied only from the medical and textile point of view, whereas others aspects ...

Carbon nanostructures have played an important role in creating a new field of materials based on carbon. Chemical modification of carbon nanostructures through grafting has been a successful step to improve dispersion and compatibility in solvents, with biomolecules and polymers to form nanocomposites. In this sense carbohydrates such as chitosan are extremely valuable because their functional groups play an important role in diversifying the applications of carbon nanomaterials. This paper reports ...

Nanocrystalline PbS thin films were prepared by Chemical Bath Deposition (CBD) at 40 ± 2°C onto glass substrates and their structural and optical properties modified by in‐situ doping with Hg. The morphological changes of the layers were analyzed using SEM and the X‐rays spectra showing growth on the zinc blende (ZB) face. The grain size determined by using X‐rays spectra for undoped samples was found to be ~ 36 nm, whereas with the doped sample was 32–20 nm. Optical absorption spectra were used to calculate ...

Graphite and graphene oxides have been studied amply in the last decade, due to their diverse properties and possible applications. Recently, their functionality as photocatalytic materials in water splitting was reported. Research in these materials is increasing due to their band gap values around 1.8-4 eV, and therefore, these are comparable with other photocatalysts currently used in heterogeneous photocatalytic processes. Thus, this research reports the photocatalytic effectiveness of graphite ...

Developing new materials or modifying the existing ones is an amply field studied in the world of research. Due to its outstanding physical and chemical properties, graphene is attractive material for new applications. The methodologies for obtaining graphene are diverse and have changed over time. Graphene oxide is a versatile form of graphene, due to the presence of oxygenated functional groups. Chemical oxidation of graphite and exfoliation by ultrasonic waves is one of the preferred methods ...

In this research, auxetic composites of polylactic acid (PLA) reinforced by keratin materials (barbs and rachis), were developed through 3D printing manufacture to induce diverse acoustic properties. To evaluate the coefficient of sound absorption, an electro-acoustic experiment was implemented. The capacity of sound absorption for the composites was superior to conventional (honeycomb) and auxetic PLA geometries without reinforcement. The statistical distribution of bubbles in a 2D foam has been determined according to their area. A 2D foam chamber was designed and constructed, which allows long-term video recordings to be made. The bubbles corresponding to the last six frames, when the so-called scaling state is attained, were digitized at equally spaced time intervals, to measure their surface and count their number of neighbors. From the numerical results the empirical distribution functions are determined. Kolmogorov’s compatibility ...

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy is a common non-invasive treatment for urinary stones whose fragmentation is achieved mainly by acoustic cavitation and mechanical stress. A few years ago, in vitro and in vivo experimentation demonstrated that such fragmentation can be improved, without increasing tissue damage, by sending a second shock wave hundreds of microseconds after the previous wave. Later, numerical simulations revealed that if the second pulse had a longer full width at half maximum ...

The mean square deviation between this fit and the actual meteorological measurements is smaller than three degrees Celsius. However, the same method applied to the humidity measurements produces a larger mean square deviation. A strong stochastical connection is ...

The purpose of this work was to develop a metamodel (Kriging model) to identify the most important input parameters of shock wave pressure profiles as used in biomedical applications without solving a large number of differential equations. Shock wave-induced cavitation is involved in several biological effects. During bubble collapse, secondary shock waves and microjets are formed. For some applications, it is desirable to enhance this phenomenon by applying a second shock wave before bubble collapse; ...

One of the main objectives of violin acoustics is a detailed analysis of the vibration state of the instrument, the source of its sound. The goal of this work was to extend a straightforward technique, naked-eye and non-destructive, to detect details of violin vibrations: laser streak patterns. Essentially, the experimental set-up only requires harmonically driving a violin in resonance, illuminating its surface with a handheld laser, and focusing on the speckle plane. The streak patterns obtained ...

A comparison between two of the so-called universal equations of state for solids is made. It is shown that although the Vinet equation and the Prieto-Renero equation are obtained on very different bases, their general form is very similar. Furthermore, the coefficients of the temperature dependent terms in the two equations are identical. This leads to a new relationship between the isothermal bulk modulus and other measurable parameters of the material. Numerical results obtained using both equations ...

The substrate used is a cylinder of graphite coated with SiC and heated by high frequency induction. The deposition rate was studied as a function of temperature in the range 900–1500°C, the total pressure varying from 2 to 180 hPa. At low temperatures an Arrhenius type ...
