The composite interaction in timber-concrete beams is usually achieved with mechanical devices, such as shear connectors or plates driven into the materials. However, this connecting system shows some inherent inconveniences, such as the need for drillings and the limited mechanical improvement owing to interface slip. Using adhesives instead of mechanical connectors might attenuate these drawbacks. However, engineers are hesitant to apply adhesives for structural purposes, mostly because of the ...

The food and feeding ecology of albatrosses during the nonbreeding season is still poorly known, particularly with regard to the cephalopod component. This was studied in black-browed Thalassarche melanophris and grey-headed T. chrysostoma albatrosses by analysing boluses collected shortly after adults returned to colonies at Bird Island, South Georgia (54°S, 38°W), in 2009. Based on stable isotopic analyses of the lower beaks, we determined the habitat and trophic level (from δ13C and δ15N, respectively) ...

Low- and moderate-impact physical activity (PA) is associated with the prevention of urinary incontinence (UI). The objective of the cross-sectional study presented herein is to analyze the factors associated with UI in physically older active women who participate in senior community groups. The variable UI was measured by the International Consultation Incontinence Questionnaire Short Form (ICIQ-SF). Socioeconomic variables were also collected, along with data on life habits and clinical history. ...

We perform the linear stability analysis for a new model for poromechanical processes with inertia (formulated in mixed form using the solid deformation, fluid pressure, and total pressure) interacting with diffusing and reacting solutes convected in the medium. We find parameter regions that lead to spatio-temporal instabilities of the coupled system. The mutual dependences between deformation and diffusive patterns are of substantial relevance in the study of morphoelastic changes in biomaterials. ...

Leprosy still represents a health problem in several countries. Affecting skin and peripheral nerves, it may lead to permanent disabilities. Disturbances on skin lipid metabolism in leprosy were already observed; however, the localization and distribution of lipids could not be accessed. The role of lipids on infectious disease has been fully addressed only recently, as they directly influence immune response. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization imaging mass spectrometry provides a powerful ...

The feasibility of in situextraction and transesterification of spent coffee ground oil into fatty acid methyl esters with supercritical methanol has been investigated in the temperature range 473–603 K, and in the pressure range 10.0–30.0 MPa. At 30.0 MPa and 603 K, a fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) yield of 84.9% was obtained. Carbon dioxide was added to methanol with the aim of reducing the operating temperature and pressure. It was demonstrated that at a reaction temperature of 573 K, pressure ...

The growing number of patients suffering from chronic renal disease is a challenge for the development of innovative therapies. Benefits of cell therapy in acute renal diseases in animal models have been reported but seldom for chronic lesions. We present evidence for the improvement of renal morphology in a model of tubulointerstitial fibrosis. Wistar rats were submitted to unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO), treated with bone-marrow mononuclear cells (UUO+BMMC) infused via the cava vein, and ...

Schistosomiasis is a water-borne parasitic illness caused by neoophoran trematodes of the genus Schistosoma. Using classical histological techniques and whole-mount preparations, the present work describes the embryonic development of Schistosoma mansoni eggs in the murine host and compares it with eggs maintained under in vitro conditions. Two pre-embryonic stages occur inside the female worm: the prezygotic stage is characterized by the release of mature oocytes from the female ovary until its ...

Abstract Background Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a rare multisystem autosomal dominant disorder caused by pathogenic variants in either the TSC1 or TSC2 gene. Common manifestations of TSC have been grouped into major and minor clinical diagnostic criteria and assessed in clinical routine workup. However, case studies point towards the existence of rare disease manifestations and to the potential association of TSC with malignant tumors. In this study we sought to characterize rare manifestations ...

The impact of stirring and homogenization on set yogurt production was assessed for fresh, refrigerated (4 days/7 °C) and frozen/thawed (1 month/-18 °C) sheep milk. Results showed that cold storage increased the fermentation time (>90min) and that yogurt from frozen/thawed milk was more sensitive to post acidification (50% higher pH drop) and had less firmness and adhesiveness (~25% lower). Stirring and homogenization changed the milk structure, reducing the natural creaming occurrence in the first hours ...

Refrigerated storage resulted in higher sedimentation and creaming (whole milk), possibly due to proteases and agglutinins. Freezing/thawing processes in whole milk increased the particle size and creaming when samples were thawed at 7 °C. Skimmed milk showed an increase in buffering capacity and a reduction ...
