Lipoprotein diacylglyceryl transferase (Lgt) catalyzes the first step in the biogenesis of Gram-negative bacterial lipoproteins which play crucial roles in bacterial growth and pathogenesis. We demonstrate that Lgt depletion in a clinical uropathogenic Escherichia coli strain leads to permeabilization of the outer membrane and increased sensitivity to serum killing and antibiotics. Importantly, we identify G2824 as the first-described Lgt inhibitor that potently inhibits Lgt biochemical activity ...

Difficulties with higher-order cognitive functions in youth are a potentially important vulnerability factor for the emergence of problematic behaviors and a range of psychopathologies. This study examined 2013 9–10 year olds in the first data release from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development 21-site consortium study in order to identify resting state functional connectivity patterns that predict individual-differences in three domains of higher-order cognitive functions: General Ability, ...

Clive Bate, Scott Rutherford, Mike Gravenor, S. W. J. Reid, Steven Williams,

The mechanisms of neuronal loss during the course of the prion diseases are not fully understood. In this study, neurones treated with certain non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) were protected against the otherwise toxic effects of a peptide derived from the prion protein, or extracts containing infectious prions (PrPSC). These NSAIDs inhibit the cyclo-oxygenase (cox) enzymes that metabolise arachidonic acid to prostaglandins (PG). Conversely, drugs that inhibited the metabolism of arachidonic ...

Transport across the nuclear membranes occurs through the nuclear pore complex (NPC), and is mediated by soluble transport factors including Ran, a small GTPase that is generally GDP-bound during import and GTP-bound for export. The dynamic nature of the NPC structure suggests a possible active role for it in driving translocation. Here we show that RanGTP but not RanGDP causes alterations of NPC structure when injected into the cytoplasm of Xenopus oocytes, including compaction of the NPC and extension ...

Abstract Fetal resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) has emerged as a critical new approach for characterizing brain development before birth. Despite the rapid and widespread growth of this approach, at present, we lack neuroimaging processing pipelines suited to address the unique challenges inherent in this data type. Here, we solve the most challenging processing step, rapid and accurate isolation of the fetal brain from surrounding tissue across thousands of non-stationary ...

Abstract The South American and West Indian Casque‐headed Treefrogs (Hylidae: Hylinae: Lophyohylini) include 85 species. These are notably diverse in morphology (e.g. disparate levels of cranial hyperossification) and life history (e.g. different reproductive modes, chemical defences), have a wide distribution, and occupy habitats from the tropical rainforests to semiarid scrubland. In this paper, we present a phylogenetic analysis of this hylid tribe based on sequence fragments of up to five mitochondrial ( ...

How the human brain processes social information is an increasingly researched topic in psychology and neuroscience, advancing our understanding of basic human cognition and psychopathologies. Neuroimaging studies typically seek to isolate one specific aspect of social cognition when trying to map its neural substrates. It is unclear if brain activation elicited by different social cognitive processes and task instructions are also spontaneously elicited by general social information. In this study, ...

A study (2004–11) of a dairy catchment stream entering an oligotrophic lake in an area of very high rainfall (~5 m year–1) yielded median concentrations of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), suspended sediment (SS) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) of 0.584, 0.074 and 3.7 g m–3, and 405/100 mL (most probable number method), respectively. Trend analysis indicated significant (P < 0.01) decreases for TN (–0.08 ± 0.02 g m–3 year–1), TP (–0.01 ± 0.005 g m–3 year–1) and SS (–0.45 ± 0.14 g m–3 year–1) and were partly ...

• Background and Aims Leaf thickness plays an important role in leaf and plant functioning, and relates to a species' strategy of resource acquisition and use. As such, it has been widely used for screening purposes in crop science and community ecology. However, since its measurement is not straightforward, a number of estimates have been proposed. Here, the validity of the (SLA × LDMC)−1 product is tested to estimate leaf thickness, where SLA is the specific leaf area (leaf area/dry mass) and LDMC is the leaf ...

Transformation of natural vegetation to other land-uses, such as crop cultivation and urban development, presents the most important threat to biodiversity. Plant and animal species distribution data were employed to identify areas of high biodiversity value in the major summer crop production region in north-eastern South Africa. These areas of biodiversity conservation importance were then evaluated in terms of their (1) potential overlap with areas currently transformed by land-uses in the region ...

Bilal Bugaje, Peter Rutherford, Mike Clifford,

Demand Side Management (DSM) is a means to gain more control over energy demand to address some of the challenges of power grids. Demand Response (DR) is an approach to DSM that aims to influence the operation times of appliances; DR is often recommended for residences. Meanwhile, residents can undermine DR if it is not convenient. Therefore, there is need for tools to aid decision-making on the appropriate DR program for residences. Whilst models are used to explore DR programs, most do not measure, ...
