Purpose of review Neuroscientific study of voluntary behaviour is increasingly relevant to clinical psychiatry, and all the more topical because of societal concerns over the prediction of 'risk'. The purpose of the present review is to highlight recent research in the area of volition as manifested in people with neuropsychiatric disease and personality disorder. This may also shed light on the 'healthy' state. Recent findings Voluntary, willed behaviours preferentially implicate specific regions ...

Stefano Padilla, Ondřej Drbohlav, Patrick R. Green, A D Spence, Mike J. Chantler,

We report results from a new methodology for investigating the visually perceived properties of surface textures. Densely sampled two-dimensional 1/fβ noise processes are used to model natural looking surfaces, which are rendered using combined point-source and ambient lighting. Surfaces are shown in motion to provide rich cues to their relief. They are generated in real time to enable observers to dynamically manipulate surface parameters. A method of adjustment is employed to investigate the effects ...

A D Spence, Mike J. Chantler,

The optimal placement of the illumination for three-image photometric stereo acquisition of smooth and rough surface textures with respect to camera noise is derived and verified experimentally. The sensitivities of the scaled surface normal elements are derived and used to provide expressions for the noise variances. An overall figure of merit is developed by considering the image-based rendering (i.e. relighting) of Lambertian surfaces. This metric is optimised numerically with respect to the illumination ...

Diffractive imaging with free-electron lasers allows structure determination from ensembles of weakly scattering identical nanoparticles. The ultra-short, ultra-bright X-ray pulses provide snapshots of the randomly oriented particles frozen in time, and terminate before the onset of structural damage. As signal strength diminishes for small particles, the synthesis of a three-dimensional diffraction volume requires simultaneous involvement of all data. Here we report the first application of a three- ...

We present recent results from an EPSRC funded project VirTex (Virtual Textile Catalogues). The goal of this project is to develop graphics and image‐processing software for the capture, storage, search, retrieval and visualisation of 3D textile samples. The ultimate objective is to develop a web‐based application that allows the user to search a database for suitable textiles and to visualize selected samples using real‐time photorealistic 3D animation. The main novelty of this work is in the combined ...

An organism may use misinformation, knowingly (through deception) or unknowingly (as in the case of camouflage), to gain advantage in a competitive environment. From an evolutionary perspective, greater tactical deception occurs among primates closer to humans, with larger neocortices. In humans, the onset of deceptive behaviours in childhood exhibits a developmental trajectory, which may be regarded as ‘normal’ in the majority and deficient among a minority with certain neurodevelopmental disorders ( ...

Section 136 of the 1983 Mental Health Act empowers the police to detain those suspected of being mentally ill in public places. The current study is a retrospective analysis of those occurring within Westminster, London, over a six-month period. A high rate of referral was found. In those individuals assessed, schizophrenia was the commonest diagnosis, but personality disorder provided the largest number of assessments. This was due to the propensity of the latter individuals to present on multiple ...

Ion suppression is a well-known phenomenon in electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometry. These suppression effects have been shown to adversely affect the accuracy and precision of quantitative bioanalytical methods using ion spray. Such suppression effects have not been as well defined in atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) and there is some debate whether these effects actually occur in the ionization process using APCI. Here an example is described where clear ion suppression ...

Abstract Researchers routinely quantify the behaviour of subsets of animals, using their findings to make inferences about wider populations. Broader conclusions, however, may be inaccurate if the subjects that are tested are not representative of these populations. One way that this can arise is through sampling bias, which can occur if the method of collecting the test subjects disproportionately selects those with particular attributes, such that they end up being over‐ or under represented within ...

This chapter discusses electromigration techniques. Paper electrophoresis represents one of the most early developed electromigration techniques. Apparatuses used for paper electrophoresis is composed of of two electrode jars and a system that holds the paper sheet between them and prevents, at least partly, the imbedded buffer from evaporation. The equipment used could be categorized into two groups with either horizontal or vertical arrangement of the paper strip. Electrophoresis in gel media ...

The paleolimnological record of diatoms and climate, spanning the last 2800 years, was investigated in a small subarctic lake (Pocket Lake) that from AD 1948 to 2004 was contaminated by gold smelting waste. An age-depth model was constructed using a combination of 210 Pb, 14 C, and tephra to determine a 2800 year history of lake ontogeny (natural aging), biological diversity, and regional climate variability. Diatoms form six strong paleoecological assemblages over time in response to changes in local ...
