Abstract Recent studies indicate that IFN-α is involved in pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus. However, direct proof that IFN-α is not only necessary, but also sufficient to induce lupus pathogenicity is lacking. In this study, we show that in vivo adenovector-mediated delivery of murine IFN-α results in preautoimmune (New Zealand Black (NZB) × New Zealand White (NZW))F1, but not in normal, mice, in a rapid and severe disease with all characteristics of systemic lupus erythematosus. Anti-dsDNA ...

We have investigated the mechanism of tolerance in a patient with severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) transplanted with HLA-haploidentical, T cell-depleted bone marrow cells obtained from the mother. At 4 years after transplantation, T cells, natural killer (NK) cells, and a small percentage (2%) of B cells were found to be of donor origin, whereas monocytes and the majority of B cells remained of host origin. In primary mixed lymphocyte cultures (MLC), the engrafted T cells of the donor did not ...

Mike U. Smith, John T. Baldwin,

A useful approach to answering the Next Generation Science Standards’ call for teaching students to demonstrate understanding using mathematical representations is use of the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (H-W eq). This article is focused on the meaning of H-W eq and its application, rather than mathematical manipulation. Typical textbook problems are critiqued, and a model problem is presented.

The Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) is designed to measure the scale of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) in the clustering of matter over a larger volume than the combined efforts of all previous spectroscopic surveys of large-scale structure. BOSS uses 1.5 million luminous galaxies as faint as i = 19.9 over 10,000 deg2 to measure BAO to redshifts z < 0.7. Observations of neutral hydrogen in the Lyα forest in more than 150,000 quasar spectra (g < 22) will constrain BAO over the redshift ...

Nutritional factors are associated with reduced risk of prostate cancer progression, yet mechanisms remain unclear. We examined the effects of lycopene and fish oil supplements versus placebo on the normal prostate microenvironment, among men pursuing active surveillance for low-burden prostate cancer. We hypothesized that lycopene or fish oil supplements would down-regulate insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) gene expression, respectively, reflecting putative proliferation ( ...

Summary The Hardy–Weinberg law is among the most important principles in the study of biological systems ( Crow, 1988 , Genetics 119, 473–476). Given its importance, many tests have been devised to determine whether a finite population follows Hardy–Weinberg proportions. Because asymptotic tests can fail, Guo and Thompson (1992, Biometrics 48, 361–372) developed an exact test; unfortunately, the Monte Carlo method they proposed to evaluate their test has a running time that grows linearly in the size ...

The purpose of the current study was to test ensiling technology in plastic bags for small holder farms in the semi arid tropics. The study consisted of three stages. Experiment 1 consisted of permeability tests of five types of commercial plastic bags to evaluate their airtightness. Results indicated that permeability of the five types of bags to oxygen ranged from 43 to 504 ml m−2 day–1 and to carbon dioxide from 420 to 8623 ml m−2 day−1. In Experiment 2 whole maize plants were ensiled in the ...

An estimated 2.1 million U.S. adults are housed within approximately 5,000 correctional and detention facilities† on any given day (1). Many facilities face significant challenges in controlling the spread of highly infectious pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Such challenges include crowded dormitories, shared lavatories, limited medical and isolation resources, daily entry and exit of staff members and visitors, continual introduction of newly ...

This study uses advanced natural language processing methods to identify companies that are aligned with the UN SDGs based on the text in their sustainability disclosures. Using CSR reports of Russel 1000 companies between 2010-2019 we apply a logistic classifier, support vector machines (SVM) and a fully-connected neural network to predict alignment with the SDGs. Specifically, we use word embeddings to augment dictionary-based input features as well as use the embeddings as features themselves ...

Hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) plays an essential role in tumor development and progression by regulating genes that are vital for proliferation, glycolysis, angiogenesis, and metastasis. To identify strategies of targeting the HIF-1 pathway, we screened a siRNA library against the entire druggable genome and a small-molecule library consisting of 691,200 compounds using a HIF-1 reporter cell line. Although the siRNA library screen failed to reveal any druggable targets, the small-molecule library ...

Water shortage around the world enhanced the search for alternative sources. Greywater (GW) can serve as a solution for water demands especially in arid and semi-arid zones. However, issues considered which include acceptability of GW segregation as a separate water treated stream, allowing its use onsite. Consequently, it is the one of next forthcoming water resources that will be used, primarily in the growing mega-cities. It will be even more rentable when combined with the roof runoff water harvesting ...
