Genomic techniques enable diagnosis and management of children and young adults with sarcomas by identifying high-risk patients and those who may benefit from targeted therapy or participation in clinical trials. Objective: to analyze the performance of an NGS gene panel for the clinical management of pediatric sarcoma patients. Early hematopoiesis is a continuous process in which hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) gradually differentiate toward specific lineages. Aging and myeloid malignant transformation are characterized by changes in the composition and regulation of HSPCs. In this study, we used single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) to characterize an enriched population of human HSPCs obtained from young and elderly healthy individuals. Based on their transcriptional profile, we identified changes in the ...

Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) malignancies characterized by ineffective hematopoiesis, with increased incidence in older individuals. Here we analyze the transcriptome of human HSCs purified from young and older healthy adults, as well as MDS patients, identifying transcriptional alterations following different patterns of expression. While aging-associated lesions seem to predispose HSCs to myeloid transformation, disease-specific alterations may trigger MDS development. ...

Coherent ecological networks (EN) composed of core areas linked by ecological corridors are being developed worldwide with the goal of promoting landscape connectivity and biodiversity conservation. However, empirical assessment of the performance of EN designs is critical to evaluate the utility of these networks to mitigate effects of habitat loss and fragmentation. Landscape genetics provides a particularly valuable framework to address the question of functional connectivity by providing a direct ...

We compared several image methods in the evaluation of the possible physeal effect in 47 osteosarcomas and 18 Ewing's sarcomas in children. The minimal follow-up was 3 years (range, 3-17). In the histological study, the physis was affected in 53% of the cases. We correlated the histological findings and the findings from the different image methods. There were more false-positive than false-negative results, and in the computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies, there were no ...

All suicides met DSM-III-R criteria for depressive symptoms, suffered a violent death and had not taken any antidepressant drugs for at least 6 months prior to death. Abstract. The increasing demand for high-resolution climate information has attracted growing attention to statistical downscaling (SDS) methods, due in part to their relative advantages and merits as compared to dynamical approaches (based on regional climate model simulations), such as their much lower computational cost and their fitness for purpose for many local-scale applications. As a result, a plethora of SDS methods is nowadays available to climate scientists, which has motivated recent efforts ...

Osteosarcoma is a primary malignant bone tumor usually arising at the metaphysis of long bones, particularly around the knee. The physis has been regarded as a barrier capable of blocking tumor extension, thus allowing it to preserve their epiphysis and therefore improve functional results. With the objective of clarifying how effective the physis is as a barrier to tumor spread, a large series of skeletally immature patients with osteosarcoma were reviewed. From 452 metaphyseal osteosarcomas a ...

The control is composed of two current loops. The main one controls the active and reactive powers in a decoupled way, and the second one, focuses on the reduction of the fifth order harmonic component. After explaining the mathematical modelling, the methodology and the experimental setup, the results of ...

Superelasticity is a characteristic thermomechanical property in shape memory alloys (SMA), which is due to a reversible stress-induced martensitic transformation. Nano-compression experiments made possible the study of this property in Cu–Al–Ni SMA micropillars, showing an outstanding ultra-high mechanical damping capacity reproducible for thousands of cycles and reliable over the years. This scenario motivated the present work, where a comparative study of the damping capacity on four copper-based ...
