During spring and summer of 2008, 101 bacterial strains was isolated from the diseased pepper leaves collected from different pepper growing areas in the Republic of Serbia. The aim of this research was to characterize the isolated strains and determine their taxonomic position according to the most recent nomenclature. Pathogenic, biochemical and physiological characteristics of isolated bacteria were tested using standard bacteriological tests. The pathogen races were determined according to the ...

Large-scale agent-based software solutions need to be able to assure constant delivery of services to end-users, regardless of the underlying software or hardware failures. Fault-tolerance of multi-agent systems is, therefore, an important issue. We present an easy and flexible way of introducing fault-tolerance to existing agent frameworks. The approach is based on two new types of mobile agents that manage efficient construction and maintenance of fault-tolerant multi-agent system networks, and ...

Several case reports show allergy and anaphylactic reactions to the fish parasite Anisakis in the domestic and occupational setting. Compared with other well-studied parasitic diseases, fish-borne parasitic zoonoses do not get enough attention, especially because these zoonoses have been limited for the most part to populations living in middle-income countries. Human fishery product-borne parasitic diseases caused by nematodes result in infection following ingestion of viable parasites, or as allergic ...

This paper investigates the application of TABU search methodology in global optimization. A general multilevel TABU search algorithm is proposed. The algorithm is applied to the problem of finding constrained global minima of a piecewise smooth function of the form ф(x) = max{ϕ1(x), …, ϕm(x)} subject to box constraints. The tests are performed on a special class of problems of this type arising from the synthesis of radar polyphase codes. It is shown that problems of this type are NP-hard.

Xanthomonas euvesicatoria phage KΦ1, a member of Myoviridae family, was isolated from the rhizosphere of pepper plants showing symptoms of bacterial spot. The phage strain expressed antibacterial activity to all X. euvesicatoria strains tested and did not lyse other Xanthomonas spp., nor other less related bacterial species. The genome of KΦ1 is double-stranded DNA of 46.077 bp including 66 open reading frames and an average GC content of 62.9%, representing the first complete genome sequence published ...

Modern enterprise-scale applications are executed on computer clusters in order to achieve horizontal scaling, as well as uninterrupted delivery of services. However, the industry-based standards and technical solutions have rarely been utilized by agent developers. This paper presents recent research effort aimed at improving our existing Java EE-based agent framework in order to fully exploit the benefits of clustered computing. Among other benefits, the new architecture provides automatic agent ...

Sooty blotch and flyspeck (SBFS) fungi colonize the surface wax layer of the fruit of apple, pear, persimmon, banana, orange, papaya, and several other cultivated tree and vine crops. In addition to colonizing cultivated fruit crops, SBFS fungi also grow on the surfaces of stems, twigs, leaves, and fruit of a wide range of wild plants. The disease occurs worldwide in regions with moist growing seasons. SBFS is regarded as a serious disease by fruit growers and plant pathologists because it can cause ...

Due to an overlapping host range, similar symptomatology and many common characteristics, Pseudomonas syringae pathovars originating from stone fruits can easily be misidentified. In order to select tests for rapid and efficient differentiation of P. s. pvs. syringae, morsprunorum and persicae, we studied the suitability and differentiating potential of some standard bacteriological and molecular methods. The development of chronic inflammatory periodontal diseases is strongly correlated with the growth and maturation of subgingival bacterial colonies. Consequently a major preventive goal should be the control of plaque formation. We conducted a randomized, controlled trial to examine the short-term effect of an intensive instructional program without professional prophylaxis on the gingival health of 240, 11-14 year old school children. Abstract The molecular identification and characterization of phytoplasmas from infected grapevines in four locations in Serbia are reported. Phytoplasmas were detected and identified by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplified 16S rDNA. Grapevine yellows were associated with three molecularly distinguishable phytoplasmas: Flavescence dorée phytoplasmas (elm yellows group: 16SrV‐C subgroup) were present only in the Župa Aleksandrovac region; ...

Phylogenetic reconstruction based on 16S rDNA placed them within the genus Agrobacterium, with A. nepotum as their closest relative. Tomatoes encounter many pathogens, such as fungi and bacteria, which reduce the yield and quality of plants and lead to large losses in production. The application of plant protection products (PPPs) is still an important and most effective measure to control plant diseases. However, the use of chemicals in agriculture contributes to environmental pollution and biodiversity loss, and it can also threaten non-target living organisms. Biological control is a widely accessible, environmentally safe, ...

Abstract Fire blight is the most devastating disease affecting pome fruit production globally. The pathogen is native to North America and was imported to western Europe in the 1950s, progressively spreading over the continent in the ensuing decades. Previous phylogenetic studies have revealed the extreme genetic homogeneity of the pathogen outside its center of origin, which makes epidemiological studies difficult. These are generally only possible using hypervariable regions of the genome such ...

During a 2002 survey in Serbia, samples of grapevine (Vitis vinifera) were collected from plants showing typical phytoplasma-like symptoms: leaf roll, leaf redness, vein chlorosis and necrosis, and absence of lignification. The material was collected from one viticultural region (Zupa Aleksandrovac), where the disease was recorded in 2000 and showed an increasing percentage of symptomatic plants every year. Total nucleic acid was extracted separately from leaf midveins and stem bark collected from ...

This paper presents Siebog, a software framework and an execution environment for the development of software agents. Built using the standard Java EE and HTML5 technologies, it provides all the benefits of clustered computing on the server, as well as platform-independence on the client. The tight integration of the two development paradigms has resulted in a system that also provides heterogeneous agent mobility, cross-platform messaging, and code sharing.
