R. G. West, Philip L. Gibbard, Steve Boreham, Christopher J. Rolfe,

Summary The geology of the High Lodge site at Mildenhall is described and re-interpreted as a sequence of deposits related to a doline formed in the underlying Chalk. Doline development in the area is considered in detail. Lacustrine sediments filling the depression contain a Palaeolithic industry and pollen assemblages that indicate contemporaneous coniferous woodland. The High Lodge sequence, at the northern end of the Warren Hill ridge, is related to the Three Hills site at the southern end of ...

Four sites in the Mildenhall-Icklingham district, all of which are known for their Lower Palaeolithic archaeological assemblages, are described and their stratigraphy is summarized. Three of these sites were visited by members of the Geologists' Association during a field excursion in June, 1992. Clast lithological data are used to differentiate between gravels of differing origin, emphasis being placed upon the presence of certain lithologies considered to be indicative of (1) pre-Anglian drainage ...

Henry William Bunbury,

Dear Sir, As the Geological Society may wish to be informed of every circumstance that tends to verify the stratification in different parts of England, I send you an account of what has been observed in this parish on piercing with a boring machine to the depth of 270 feet. I will first give a short description of the country where the trial was made. A part of the large parish of Mildenhall is fen-land, and belongs to the great Bedford Level. The substrata of the fens are not well ascertained; ...
