Oro-antral communications (OAC) greater than 4–5mm in diameter can seldom be counted on to heal spontaneously without the necessity for surgical closure. The initial experience in applying an absorbable polyglactin/polydioxanon implant (Ethisorb®), in non-surgical closure of OAC ranging from 5 to 7 mm in diameter, is presented. Twelve patients of varying ages with OAC up to72 h in duration, have been treated with Ethisorb®. Failures were not demonstrated in the form of the creation of an oro-antral ...

Metastatic lesions represent approximately 1% of all the intraoral lesions. They most commonly originate from lung and breast carcinomas, while the third most common source is the renal cell carcinoma. In this paper, we present the rare case of metastases of renal cell carcinoma in the mandibular gingiva of a 53-year-old male patient.

Schwannoma is a benign nerve tumour that originates from Schwann cells, which cover peripheral nerves. Intraosseous schwannoma of the jaw is rare. Primary schwannoma of the mandible presenting as a periapical radiolucency on a non-vital endodontically treated tooth has rarely been referred to in the English medical literature. A rare case of intraosseous schwannoma is reported in a 23-year-old woman. The patient presented clinically with a painful swelling on the right side of the mandible and with ...

Summary The term necrotizing fasciitis (NF) was first used by Wilson in 1952, who described this rare, however, progressive infection that primarily affects the fascia and subcutaneous tissues. Necrotizing fasciitis may affect any part of the body; however, it usually appears on the extremities. The most common microorganisms isolated in NF are Staphylococcus aureus , group A Streptococci , and Escherichia Coli . We are presenting the case of a sixty-seven-year old woman, who was admitted for the perforation ...

Introduction: A large group of benign bone tumors of the jaw are fibroosseous tumors. The basis of the pathophysiological processes of this type of tumor is the replacement of normal bone tissue by fibrous tissue. The cemento-ossifying fibroma (COF) belongs to this group of tumors. Case report: A rare case of COF in the maxilla end maxillary sinus in a 40-year old patient is presented. In the initial stage, COF developed asymptomatically, as most benign tumors. In later stage other symptoms appeared, ...

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma, compared to other tumors of salivary glands, occurs in 5–10% of cases. Histopathologically, it is divided into a well differentiated tumor that is of low-grade of malignancy, and a medium and poorly differentiated tumor of high grade of malignancy. Central mucoepidermoid carcinoma (CMEC) of the mandible was firstly described by Lepp in 1936, on a 66-year-old female patient. CMEC is characterized by atypical clinical image and radiological manifestation.A 55-year-old female ...

Background:Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common of head and neck malignancies in well-developed countries. In most cases, patients with OSCC experience a degree of nutritional status disturbances and decreased quality of life (QoL).This study aimed to compare nutritional status and QoL in 51 patients before and after surgery for OSCC. Material/Methods:Fifty-one eligible patients with OSCC were followed during a 3-year period (2019)(2020)(2021)(2022).For all patients, we determined ...

Abstract Cancers of the oral tongue (OT) and floor of the mouth (FOM) are frequently grouped together as carcinomas of the tongue and floor of the mouth (OTFOM). The incidence rate of these cancers varies worldwide from 0.1/100,000 persons a year for females in Algeria, Chile and Korea to 7.4/100,000 persons a year for men in New Delhi, India. The aim of this study was to analyze the trends in age-standardized incidence rates of oral tongue cancer in the Belgrade population during the period of past ...

Summary Ameloblastoma, a semi-benign odontogenic tumor, is divided into four subtypes based on the clinical presentation, radiological manifestations and histological characteristics. Radiologically, it manifests itself in the form of uni- or multicystic intrabony expansive lesions, with destruction of the medullary zone of the existing bone, resorption and possible perforation of the buccal and lingual cortex. The patient, a 62-year-old woman, came to the Clinic for Maxillofacial Surgery in Niš ...

Introduction: Carcinoma of the stratified squamous epithelium of the oral cavity - oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is an invasive pathological lesion of the epithelium with varying degrees of squamous differentiation. It is characterized by early and extensive metastases, infiltration of adjacent anatomical structures, frequent recurrences, and a relatively low five-year survival rate of less than 50%. The aim of the study to determine the correlation between the analysis of the lymphocytic infiltrate ...

Introduction/Objective. Nasolacrimal duct obstruction with consequent epiphora and the development of dacryocystitis (DC) represents a common pathological entity in the clinical practice of ophthalmologists and maxillofacial surgeons. The etiology of DC is multifactorial and still has not been clarified in detail. It is considered that ascending infections from the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, injuries and surgical interventions in the middle third of the face, dacryoliths, tumors of the lacrimal ...

Introduction/Objective. A mucocele is a benign cystic but extremely expansive change in paranasal cavities, first described in literature by Langenbeck in 1820. The etiology of mucoceles is still a subject of debate. It is assumed that the obstruction of the frontal sinus duct and drainage impairment into the middle nasal meatus, as a consequence of a chronic infection, trauma, or tumor, represent one of the main causes of their occurrence. The aim of this study was to describe ophthalmological ...

Malnutrition, or insufficient or poor nutrition, represents a lack of basic nutrients in a human organism.Being incapable of sufficient intake of nutrients, patients with intraoral carcinomas (ICs) are often affected by malnutrition. One of the most frequently used measures of nutritional status is the body mass index (BMI), an anthropometric parameter. When biochemical parameters are concerned, the level of serum albumin (SA) is the one most commonly employed. The aim of this study was to analyze the ...
