Structural and functional characteristics of mangrove forests are primarily governed by the interaction of environmental characteristics, that act in global, regional or local scales. However, in areas submitted to strong influence of human activities, disturbance should be considered seriously. In this way, the structural characteristics of mangroves of Guanabara bay were studied during three years (2000-2002). The studied forests presented a high structural diversity, reflecting the action of disturbances, ...

The free-exploratory paradigm (FEP) is currently the only proposed animal model of trait anxiety, making it highly valuable to behavioural neuroscience. However, FEP has not yet been automated, so its results depend on human scoring, which can be quite imprecise. The aim of this study was, therefore, to validate an automated version of FEP, using a commercially available video-tracking system (ANY-maze(©) - Stoelting Co., USA). To achieve this, two experiments were performed. The first one evaluated ...

A group of destructive changes occurring in jaws in patients with maxillary complete dentures and mandibular removable partial dentures (bilaterally) has been described in the literature as the combination syndrome. However, this condition is not clinically observed in all patients. The aim of this study was to establish the prevalence index on signs of combination syndrome and to verify whether these changes also occurred in patients rehabilitated with a mandibular removable partial denture (unilaterally). ...

This study brings information on the dynamics of C and N in urban forests in a subtropical region. We tested the hypothesis that C and N isotopic sign of leaves and soil and physiological traits of trees would vary from center to periphery in a megacity, considering land uses, intensity of automotive fleet and microclimatic conditions. 800 trees from four fragments were randomly chosen. Soil samples were collected at every 10 cm in trenches up to 1 m depth to analyze C and N contents. Both, plants ...

The recovery of mangrove forest affected by an oil spill was monitored between 2000 and 2005. We could observe some characteristic of gap recolonization: input of propagules; an initial phase with increase of density and low mortality of saplings, followed by a period of community development (density decrease associated with an increase of the mean height of saplings). On the other hand, we also observed some signs of the influence of sediment contamination by hydrocarbons on the recovery process. ...

ABSTRACT Introduction: When impressions are taken, saliva and blood are frequently seen in the material, and washing them does not always guarantee that all organisms have been removed. Therefore, methods for disinfecting impressions (immersion and spray) have become a necessity, but they can affect the accuracy of dental impressions. Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the dimensional stability of dental impression materials after immersion in disinfectant solutions. Material and methods: This ...

Abstract Background DNA replication in trypanosomatids operates in a uniquely challenging environment, since most of their genomes are constitutively transcribed. Trypanosoma cruzi , the etiological agent of Chagas disease, presents high variability in both chromosomes size and copy number among strains, though the underlying mechanisms are unknown. Results Here we have mapped sites of DNA replication initiation across the T. cruzi genome using Marker Frequency Analysis, which has previously only ...

We derive the non-equilibrium fluctuations of one-dimensional symmetric simple exclusion processes in contact with stochastic reservoirs which are regulated by a factor n−θ. Depending on the range of θ we obtain processes with various boundary conditions. Moreover, as a consequence of the previous result, we deduce the non-equilibrium stationary fluctuations. The main ingredient to prove these results is the derivation of precise bounds on the two-point space–time correlation function, which are ...

We consider one-dimensional exclusion processes with long jumps given by a transition probability of the form pn(⋅)=s(⋅)+γna(⋅), such that its symmetric part s(⋅) is irreducible with finite variance and its antisymmetric part is absolutely bounded by s(⋅). We prove that under diffusive time scaling and strength of asymmetry nγn→n→∞b≠0, the equilibrium density fluctuations are given by the unique energy solution of the stochastic Burgers equation.

In this paper we give a new proof of the second order Boltzmann–Gibbs principle introduced in Gonçalves and Jara (Arch Ration Mech Anal 212(2):597–644, 2014). The proof does not impose the knowledge on the spectral gap inequality for the underlying model and it relies on a proper decomposition of the antisymmetric part of the current of the system in terms of polynomial functions. In addition, we fully derive the convergence of the equilibrium fluctuations towards (1) a trivial process in case of ...

We characterize the crossover regime to the KPZ equation for a class of one-dimensional weakly asymmetric exclusion processes. The crossover depends on the strength asymmetry $an^{2-\gamma}$ ($a,\gamma>0$) and it occurs at $\gamma=1/2$. We show that the density field is a solution of an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck equation if $\gamma\in(1/2,1]$, while for $\gamma=1/2$ it is an energy solution of the KPZ equation. The corresponding crossover for the current of particles is readily obtained.
