This project aimed to explore staff and student opinions on the introduction of choice in assessment, drawing upon the principles of Inclusive Pedagogy, Disability Studies and Universal Design. The mixed methods research explored the possibility that students may feel more positively supported during the assessment and feedback process if a range of methods of assessment are available. There was overall support for the proposal, but with some reservations, for example, parity between the different ...

Discrete systems of infinitely long polarizable line dipoles are considered in the quasistatic limit, interacting with a two-dimensional cloaking system consisting of a hollow plasmonic cylindrical shell. A numerical procedure is described for accurately calculating electromagnetic fields arising in the quasistatic limit, for the case when the relative permittivity of the cloaking shell has a very small imaginary part. Animations are given which illustrate cloaking of discrete systems, both for ...

On May 3, 1954, a mother brought in two children, ages 8 and 11 years, because of alopecia of the scalp, which she herself called moth eaten. She had feared that the condition was ringworm. Little history was obtained, since the mother had noticed the alopecia only recently—a week, or two —and only the story of the children was available. The patients' home was adacent to some wooded ground which the children frequented. They indicated that their itching of the scalp came when they were in the woods. ...

Thorium X is a radioactive substance which has been used in dermatology for almost 40 years. Since the report of Nageli and Jessner (1) on the dermatologic uses of thorium X, numerous publications have appeared concerning its therapeutic effectiveness and freedom from dangerous sequeiae (2). In the past, investigators have been able to study the effects of thorium X on human skin by clinical response and histopathologic changes; only a few speculations have been made concerning the mechanism of its ...

Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of Loxosceles reclusa venom demonstrated that only one of seven or eight major (plus three or four minor) protein components caused necrosis in guinea pig skin. Sephadex gel filtration separated the venom into three major peaks, the second peak of which contained the dermonecrotic activity. Hyperimmunization of rabbits with increasing doses of venom from L. reclusa produced potent precipitating antisera, and the rabbits became resistant to lesion development. Ouchterlony- ...

The quasistatic field around a circular hole in a two-dimensional hyperbolic medium is studied. As the loss parameter goes to zero, it is found that the electric field diverges along four lines each tangent to the hole. In this limit, the power dissipated by the field in the vicinity of these lines, per unit length of the line, goes to zero but extends further and further out so that the net power dissipated remains finite. Additionally the interaction between polarizable dipoles in a hyperbolic ...

Recent years have seen an upsurge of interest in knowledge. Leading organisations now recognise the importance of identifying what they know, sharing what they know and using what they know for maximum benefit. Many organisations employ knowledge engineers to capture knowledge from experts using the principles and techniques of knowledge engineering. The emphasis is on a structured approach built on a sound understanding of the psychology of expertise and making use of knowledge modelling methods ...

Incarcerated HIV-infected persons in San Francisco have benefited from intensive case management in jail and postrelease, which includes but is not focused on interventions to prevent transmission. In this population of predominately injection drug users (IDUs), we had the opportunity to examine interview data from 1999 and 2005 that included health characteristics and risk factors. Those in 2005 were less likely to be satisfied with social support and less likely to be partnered; more likely to ...
