To assess the mutual relationship between acute osmotic stimulation and arginine vasopressin (AVP) gene expression, 2 ml/100 g body weight of 0.9 M NaCl was intraperitoneally administered into conscious rats. They were decapitated to collect blood and brain samples before and 15 min and 1, 3, 6, and 9 h after the injection. The total RNA from the hypothalamus or whole brain tissue was used to determine AVP mRNA by Northern blot analyses with a complementary DNA probe. Plasma AVP and osmolality increased ...

A high‐thermal‐expansion ceramic consisting of leucite crystals was prepared by sintering leucite powder. The densification was promoted by adding Li 2 CO 3 or Na 2 CO 3 . The leucite ceramic obtained had a thermal expansion coefficient of about 2.4 × 10 −5 /°C from room temperature to 600°C. Some of the Li + and Na + ions were incorporated into the leucite crystal lattice to form solid solutions, and the characteristic tetragonal‐cubic inversion point shifted from ca. 600° to 650°C.

Hydrous tin oxide powders were precipitated at room temperature via the neutralization of sodium stannate with gluconic acid. The gluconic acid was generated by the oxidation of glucose, with the assistance of a glucose oxidase/catalase system. The hydrous tin oxide, which had a large surface area, was obtained when a high concentration of enzymes was used as a solution. However, the apparent sizes of the precipitates were ∼0.3 μm, independent of the enzyme concentration. The precipitates were converted ...

α;1,4- N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase (α4GnT) is a glycosyltransferase that mediates transfer of GlcNAc to βGal residues with α1,4-linkage, forming GlcNAcα1 → 4Galβ→R structures. In normal human tissues, glycoproteins having GlcNAcα1→4Galβ→R structures at non-reducing terminals are exclusively limited to the mucins secreted from glandular mucous cells of gastric mucosa, Brunner's gland of duodenum, and accessory gland of pancreaticobiliary tract. Recently, we have isolated a cDNA encoding human α4GnT ...

Extensive allelotyping studies have implicated several tumor-suppressor loci on chromosomes 3p, 5q, 6q, 8p, 9pq, 10q, 11q, 14q, 17p, 18q and 19p in human kidney tumorigenesis. The PTEN (also called MMAC1 and TEP1) gene, a candidate tumor suppressor located at chromosome 10q23.3, is mutated in a variety of sporadic malignancies as well as in patients with Cowden disease. To investigate the potential role of the PTEN gene in renal tumorigenesis, we searched for abnormalities of the gene in 68 primary ...

Most benign thyroid nodules found on fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) can be followed with periodic ultrasonography. During follow-up, when nodules grow, re-aspiration or surgical resection for a histologic diagnosis is recommended. However, there is little evidence regarding the malignancy risk associated with nodule growth. We retrospectively reviewed the records of 542 patients with FNAC-diagnosed adenomatous nodules (ANs) who underwent surgery in 2011-2012 at Kuma Hospital. Among them, 196 ...

A member of a novel family of the human major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I genes termed MIC (MHC class I chain-related genes), MICA, has been recently identified near the HLA-B gene on the short arm of human chromosome 6. The predicted amino acid sequence of the MICA chain suggests that it folds similarly to typical class I chains and may have the capacity to bind peptides or other short ligands. Therefore, MICA is predicted to have a specialized function in antigen presentation or T cell ...

A modified homogeneous precipitation technique involving enzymatic decomposition of urea was proposed and was applied to the synthesis of alumina precursors. Spherical aluminum hydroxide aggregates were prepared at 298 K from aqueous solutions containing aluminum sulfate, urea and urease. In contrast to the conventional technique involving thermally induced decomposition of urea, the resultant aggregates were amorphous with no trace of pseudoboehmite. The apparent rate of nucleation of the aggregates ...

There is a growing need for the precise outdoor performance measurement of photovoltaic (PV) modules for low-cost onsite performance measurement, monitoring, and failure diagnosis. For the precise evaluation of a PV module, an accurate temperature measurement technique is required. It is necessary to measure the temperature of the solar cell in a module structure (junction temperature) because it determines the temperature characteristics of the PV module, rather than the temperature of the backsheet. ...

Differences in the seasonal variations of the lipid contents and the fatty acid compositions in the flesh of parr, residual type and seaward migration type of wild Masu salmon parr (Oncorhynchus masou) during fresh-water habitation were investigated. The lipid content decreased gradually from summer to winter in each type. In spring, the lipid content in the residual type increased rapidly, while that in the seaward migration type tended to decrease after a slight initial increase. In autumn, the ...

The problem of natural vibrations of an isosceles-triangular plate with all edges clamped or with two equal edges clamped and the base edge supported is treated in this paper by means of the energy method, which was applied by one of the authors to the eigenvalue problems of a rhomboidal plate with all edges clamped. Numerical values of the fundamental frequencies are calculated for plates with several contained angles, and they are checked by experiments.

To ascertain the causes of the regional differences in the mortality due to cerebral vascular lesions, epidemiologic studies of hypertension were carried out on randomly selected inhibitants in two villages in northern Honshu, Japan (designated A and B), which had different death rates from this disease (272.6 per 100,000 in A and 104.0 per 100,000 in B during the period 1958 to 1962). The high motality in village A was associated with elevated mean blood pressure levels and an increased incidence ...

The existence of testosterone-binding component in the cytosol fraction of the male rat liver was shown. The binding ability of the component with testosterone was decreased by the addition of excess unlabeled steroids, but the steroid binding activity of the serum was not affected. The Scatchard plot indicated that the component has a moderate binding affinity with testosterone and the number of the binding sites of the component is limited.

We isolated the human arylhydrocarbon receptor (AhR) cDNA from a human lung cDNA library, by using mouse AhR cDNA as a labeled probe. The nucleotide sequence of cloned human AhR cDNA is identical to the previously reported human AhR sequence [Dolwick et al. (1993), Mol. Pharmacol. 44, 911-917] from cell line HepG2. The overall amino acid identity with mouse AhR from cell line Hepa-1 is 72.5%. The human AhR expressed either in COS-7 cells or in a reticulocyte lysate in vitro translation system showed ...

Streptococcal pyrogenic exotoxin B (SPE B) was purified and its protease and mitogenic activities were investigated. The apparent molecular mass of SPE B purified in the presence of iodoacetic acid was 42 kDa, whereas 29-kDa SPE B was predominant without the reagent. A polyclonal antibody raised against the 29-kDa species reacted with both species, indicating that the 42-kDa species was a precursor of the 29-kDa entity. Both the 42- and 29-kDa species enhanced [ 3 H]thymidine incorporation into human ...

Because hepatic vasculatures exhibit variations, a preoperative evaluation of the vascular anatomy and an estimation of the volume of the liver graft are essential for successful adult living donor liver transplantation. Using 3-dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT), we analyzed the volumetric and anatomical relationship of the hepatic vasculatures of liver grafts. The livers of 223 potential donors were analyzed by 3D CT. Volumetric analysis was performed for each hepatic vein and its tributaries. ...

Double-filtration plasmapheresis (DFPP) selectively removes high molecular weight substances including hepatitis C virus (HCV). Four live donor liver transplantation (LDLT) recipients with HCV received combination therapy with low-dose interferon (IFN) and ribavirin with DFPP.
