東北地方の太平洋沿岸には,続成作用の影響が少なく,保存状態のよい化石や堆積構造を観察できる非海成~浅海成の白亜系が点在している.下部白亜系の宮古層群は,浅海成の波浪堆積物が主体で海生動物化石を多産し,上部白亜系の久慈層群は琥珀やカキ類の密集層,および様々な脊椎動物化石を産出することで注目されている.この巡検では,宮古層群最下部の非海成層を形成する湾奧デルタの堆積物から宮古層群中部~上部の海生動物化石密集層や津波堆積物を含む浅海層の層序,さらに非海成~浅海成層からなる久慈層群の層序および堆積構造などを観察する.また,久慈層群玉川層の最上部から報告された恐竜などを含む陸生脊椎動物化石群の発掘現場や久慈琥珀博物館も訪問する.

岩手県宮古市日出島に露出している下部白亜系(アプチアン~アルビアン)宮古層群の日出島層は,主にタービダイト砂岩と泥岩の互層と礫岩層や厚い砂岩層から成り,スランプ層や土石流堆積物を伴う.土石流堆積物からは,保存状態の悪いGlycymerisやEriphyla,Nipponitrigonia,厚歯二枚貝などの二枚貝化石が産出し,これら浅海生の二枚貝化石は典型的な異地性の産状を示す.

2011年の東北地方太平洋沖地震津波発生後の岩手県宮古湾では,水質調査が行われておらず,津波発生後の宮古湾全体の水質環境は不明な状況にある.そこで本研究では,津波発生後の2013年9月および12月に水温,塩分,濁度,DOおよびクロロフィルaの同時計測が可能な可搬型多項目水質計を用いて,宮古湾内24~28箇所の多地点かつ鉛直0.1m間隔の高解像度の観測を行った. その結果,閉伊川および津軽石川付近に淡水流入の影響による低塩分水塊が見られるが,同様に湾中央部東側付近にも空間的に独立した低塩分水塊の存在が認められるなど宮古湾の水質の特徴が明らかとなった.また,わずか6時間で表層のクロロフィルaや濁度の分布が大きく変わることも示された.

2011年東北地方太平洋沖地震津波における岩手県宮古市の津波現地調査を実施し,津波痕跡高の測定および堤防や建物など構造物の被害状況について調べた.津波の高さは宮古湾から女遊戸で浸水高が5-10m,遡上高が10-16m,田老では最大で21.3mの遡上高であり,宮古湾の浸水範囲は1933年昭和三陸津波と1960年チリ津波を上回る規模である.津波痕跡高と堤防高との比較から,堤防による津波低減効果が確認された.さらに,RC造および鉄骨造の建物の被災状況について調べた.RC造は本調査の範囲では漂流物が衝突した例を除き無被害であった.一方,鉄骨造は津波が建物高を越えていない状況では無被害であったが,ほぼ同じ外力条件下であっても,建物高を越える津波により建屋の上部から押しつぶされることで,建物全体が破壊する被害が確認された.
