Though extremely valuable to the local marine tourism industry, there is a dearth of published information on the ecology and population dynamics of reef manta rays (Mobula alfredi) in Raja Ampat, West Papua, Indonesia.Knowledge of the movement ecology in particular of this large and scattered population is urgently needed to better manage the rapidly expanding manta-focused tourism. Here we report the results of an initial passive acoustic telemetry study designed to provide local managers with the ...

This paper reports the occurrence of the davilrays Mobula japanica, in the western Atlantic, and Mobula tarapacana, in Brazilian waters. The records of those species were based in preserved, collected, and scuba watching specimens from Northeast, Central and Southeast Brazil. The specimens of M. japanica are first positively recorded in the western Atlantic, confirming the world-wide distribution pattern this species, previuosly suggested by some authors. This species is probably a common oceanic- ...

Abstract Devil rays of the genus Mobula are subject to fishing exploitation worldwide and are considered vulnerable to overexploitation due to population reduction, which is evidenced by a decline in the number of catches of these animals. Limited biological knowledge on these species has forced the use of precautionary conservation measures in countries where intensive fishing occurs. This study aimed to describe biological data of interest for estimating the feasibility of the recovery of Mobula ...

Abstract The present work aimed at studying the sicklefin devil ray (Mobula tarapacana) that aggregates seasonally in the Saint Peter and Saint Paul Archipelago (SPSPA). From December 2008 to June 2016, 827 rays were sighted through free diving visual census survey. From the total of the records, it was possible to identify the sex of 361 specimens, in which 215 were females and 146 were males. The disk width ranged from 2.40 m to 3.20 m with mean size of 2.60 m, for both males and females, indicating ...

Courtship behaviour of the giant devil ray Mobula mobular is described from northern New Zealand, temperate southwest Pacific Ocean, for the first time. A mating train consisting of a full-term pregnant female and up to four males was observed over a period of 147 minutes. Their behaviour was similar to courtship behaviour observed in other large mobulids. Biting of the female was not observed, possibly due to the female's use of the surface to prevent males positioning themselves above her. However, ...

This manuscript deals with the Bent-fin Devil Ray Mobula thurstoni for its first time occurrence in the Andaman & Nicobar waters around the Indian EEZ which is a new locality record confirming the range extension of the species to the southeast of Bay of Bengal (the Andaman Sea). A female specimen of 318mm disc length and weighing 2.47Kg was caught by a multiday bottom trawler operated off North Bay and was landed at Junglighat fishing harbour, South Andaman. A detailed diagnostic description and morphometric ...

Captures of 11 spinetail devil rays, Mobula japanica (Müller et Henle, 1841), from the northern coast of Tunisian (central Mediterranean) are reported in the present paper. Of these 11 specimens, five specimens were described. These captures constitute the first records of the species in the Tunisian waters, but also in the Mediterranean Sea, extending its distribution. This unusual occurrence of M. japanica is probably due to a migration from the eastern tropical Atlantic into the Mediterranean Sea ...

Manta and devil rays are an iconic group of globally distributed pelagic filter feeders, yet their evolutionary history remains enigmatic. We employed next generation sequencing of mitogenomes for nine of the 11 recognized species and two outgroups; as well as additional Sanger sequencing of two mitochondrial and two nuclear genes in an extended taxon sampling set. Analysis of the mitogenome coding regions in a Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian framework provided a well-resolved phylogeny. The deepest ...

Csilla Ari,

Changes of body coloration have not been described in manta rays (genus Manta) so far; therefore, their natural body coloration is used to distinguish species and their ventral spot markings are used to identify individuals worldwide to estimate their population size or seasonal migration. The present study describes the first evidence of rapid coloration changes of manta rays based on observations of captive individuals. Body coloration changes were observed most intensely on the dorsal surface ...
