Abstract. Soil classification is a tool for stratifying and generalizing information on soil resources but most systems are tailored to handle only slightly disturbed soil. We tested the applicability of the legend of the FAO‐Unesco Soil Map of the World and the new World Reference Base for Soil Resources by classifying at the highest order 831 profiles from a nationwide 7 km grid survey in Denmark, where soils are developed in Quaternary glacial and marine sediments and intensively farmed. Comparison ...

A patient with progressive perceptive deafness, transient attacks of fever with urticaria, and amyloidosis is described. This disease complex has been reported as a hereditary entity; in our case, however, there were no similar findings in the family, except deafness. Amyloid was demonstrated in biopsy specimens from the kidney and the liver, and in the vessel walls of a duodenal biopsy specimen.

Abstract Chromosome studies were performed on bone marrow aspirates from 15 patients treated with azathioprine. In most patients the immunosuppressive therapy produced structural changes of the chromosome complement. The structural chromosome aberrations disappeared after cessation of therapy. In four patients no evidence of chromosome abnormalities could be found during therapy with azathioprine. It is proposed that the study of bone marrow cells may be more important than that of short‐term leukocyte ...

Abstract Fifteen patients suffering from various “non‐leukaemic” myeloid disorders have been cytogenetically investigated. Evidence is presented that chromosome abnormalities may be present in both the erythrocytic and granulocytic precursors of the bone marrow. On the basis of a review of the literature it is suggested that myeloid disorders with abnormal stemlines in the bone marrow should be considered neoplastic conditions. It is concluded that the abnormal chromosome complements may be present ...

Abstract. Cytogenetic studies have been carried out on bone marrow aspirates from 50 patients with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). Abnormal stem lines were present in 22 patients; the remainder had a diploid chromosome complement. In all patients the majority of the metaphases had a blurred appearance and in many of the bone marrow aspirates studied before therapy the blurred metaphases showed chromatid breaks. Several bone marrow aspirates were obtained from six patients with a diploid chromosome ...

The cytogenetic effect of rubidomycin in vivo was studied in bone marrow cells of Wistar rats. 24 h after the administration of rubidomycin in doses of 5 and 10 mg per kg body weight, from 60 to 85% of the metaphases showed structural chromosome abberations. The proportion of abnornal metaphases varied with the period that had elapsed since the administration of rubidomycin. Lymphocyte cultures from the peripheral blood of treated rats showed only a few percent of abnormal metaphases. It is concluded ...

Abstract. In continuation of a previous study, five additional patients with acute leukaemia have been studied, characterized by abnormal bone marrow karyotypes and fairly well represented erythropoiesis. In all five patients the percentage of erythroblast mitoses (16–62% of the bone marrow mitoses) was definitely higher than that of normal metaphases. These data confirm the previous results and suggest that, in acute myeloid leukaemia, the chromosome abnormalities are not confined to the cells of ...

The chromosomal aberrations in tumor cells obtained by bone marrow aspiration from a patient with non-endemic Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) are reported. Twenty percent of the cells contained the marker chromosome 14q+ earlier described in endemic Burkitt's tumors. Other marker chromosomes were found only in mitoses which did not contain the 14q+.

ABSTRACT To evaluate changes in bone composition during treatment with corticosteroids, the bone mineral content (BMC, measured by photon absorptiometry) and the degree of bone mineralization (measured as the bone phosphorus/hydroxyproline ratio) were determined in 18 patients during prednisone treatment for haematological and connective tissue diseases. The prednisone dose ranged from 12 to 51 mg/day (mean 27). The BMC decreased significantly (mean 2.5%) during the studied 12 weeks of treatment, but ...

The corpuscular elements of the peripheral blod and the morphology and chromosome constitution of bone marrow cells have been studied in patients before and during lithium therapy as well as in patients who had received lithium for a substantial period. Lithium therapy produced elevated total white cell, granulocyte, eosinophil and thrombocyte counts and a lymphocytopenia, whereas no effect was seen on the erythrocyte and reticulocyte counts. There were no morphological or cytogenetic changes in ...

A family with a tendency to thrombosis and decreased antithrombin III (AT III) activity in plasma, but normal immunoreactive AT III is reported. 7 members of the family had the AT III defect, 4 of whom have had thrombotic episodes. The importance of biological determination of AT III when studying patients with recurrent thrombotic episodes is emphasized.

During the last 8 years (1971–1979) all newly diagnosed previously untreated patients with Hodgkin's disease in Denmark have been centralized to uniform staging procedures and treatment. A total of 802 patients were registered, or 2 patients /100 000. Lymphangiography was performed in 708 patients (88%), and 437 patients (55%) underwent laparotomy with splenectomy. Treatment included radiotherapy, combination chemotherapy (MOPP or similar programmes), and combined modality treatment. The overall 8‐year ...

The chromosomal findings in 25 cases of multiple myeloma are reported. The chromosomes were directly prepared from bone marrow cells and studied by trypsin-Leishman banding. Abnormal stem lines were found in 16 cases (64%), and were characterized by banding in 12 cases. Twelve cases were hyperdiploid; 11 cases carried marker chromosomes, 50% of which involved chromosome No. 1. Five cases were trisomic for 1q21-1q3. A vulnerable point was located on 3q27 or 28 or 29. The two cases that carried the ...

Abstract Cytogenetic studies have been performed in 35 patients with potentially leukaemic haematological disorders. Abnormal stem lines were present in six patients, three of whom died from leukaemia or aggressive myelofibrosis within a few months. One patient developed leukaemia more than four years after the demonstration of the abnormal stem line. The chromatin of the abnormal bone marrow metaphases from the patients had a blurred appearance. The remaining two patients survived for 22 and 39 ...

The cytogenetic effect of melphalan was studied in bone marrow cells of Wistar rats in vivo. Melphalan produces structural aberrations of the chromatid and chromosome type, whereas no numerical aberrations were seen. The proportion of abnormal metaphases varied with the period that had elapsed since the administration of melphalan. Repeated large doses of melphalan were not able to produce permanent damage to the chromosome complement.
